Yes, this is the same guy who doesn't use toilet paper. I really need to work on my screening process.

Anyways, my roommate asked me about my credit limit to see if I could buy a laptop for him. Apparently his Indian credit card company will overcharge him considerably for buying things in American dollars. He offered to pay me by check.

Later on he asked me about my social security number, to see if I would cosign for him to get a cellular phone. It'll be at least 6 weeks before he can get his own SS#, and without that he can't get a cellphone apparently.

I have never, ever EVAR had a bad roommate, and never understood all the "I hate my roommate" threads on AT before. But this guy just makes me feel uncomfortable! I think his expectations for the roommate relationship are a bit much (he's offered to cook me dinner and seemed upset that I prefer to take meals at different times than he does.)

Is this one of those Indian guys who never showers and smells funny?

Dude, don't you have friends you could live with? I know it doesn't work out all the time...but still.

Don't do anything that the little man in the back of your head says not to do.

does he have any people around that he can depend on? You might be the closest thing he has to a friend... for now.

probably time to get a new roommate or think about moving out...he will abuse your weakness gradually and hopefully you won't be charged with handling his past due cell phone bills later on since you cosigned and unknown credit card accounts.

HELL no don't give him your SSN or cosign a phone for him. Let him get a prepaid cellphone until then.

Who is on the lease? Talk to him about it, if he is an ass about it, find him a new place in the apartment complex.

Has he offered for you to buy him a car, and he'll pay you with a cashier's check for $3000 over the asking price? :p

well, if hes International, these ARE VALID points. if hes really trying to screw u, thats up to you.
But yes, international credit cards, when used to spend in the US with charge u over head charges. JUST like US credit when spent in other countries. I think my Visa charges me like 3% or more probably, if I spend in a different currency. there are some credit cards which let u get away with it.
If you need a cell phone, you NEED a valid social for credit verification. sometimes they want a driver's license too, and im guessing ur rommate doesnt have one either. I had get couple of phones for my international friends under my name and social....but they were my friends, not just any roommate who i dont trust or anything.

Not that im defending him, but if hes not a fraud or anything, he needs ur (or someone's) help in getting these things. Up to you if you want to. Also, its really hard to fraud nowdays with a ll that coverage. If hes giving you the check, deposit it before u buy it... tell him, you need the money in the bank to pay it off. You can always report him, and return the laptop to get your money back. I doubt he will run away from the school.
No harm in getting him a phone under ur social. Its just for credit purposes. You can still have the phone under his name with his billing after 6 weeks. I dont see any real trouble here, but thats just me...ive helped out my friends, but i dont know this guy..so... u decide.

1. Force him to do things the U.S. way. i.e. use toilet paper, not a disgusting jug
2. Tell him to buy a disposable cell phone. They're $20 or so and you purchase phone cards to use them, don't need a SS# for that. Otherwise, he'll just have to wait. Unlike air, food or water, cell phones are not necessary to one's survival.
3. Don't buy him anything unless he ponies up the cash FIRST. There have been many, many stories about roommates screwed over by cash. It'll be bad enough if he somehow "forgets" to pay his rent every month.
