My roommate and I made a pact not to turn on the heat in our apartment till next semester...

My roommate and I are very competitive... we always do stupid bets/challenges, to decide everything from who buys beer for the weekend to who takes out the trash. A few weeks ago we made a bet "first person to fill up their car with gas has to do the dishes for a week" - and that ended with us BOTH stranded with no gas in our cars driving home from class on the same day.

Anyway.

Our longest-standing pact involves the heat in our apartment. Heating costs are going through the roof, so we decided we wouldn't turn the heat on in our apartment until spring semester.

Right now I'm pretty cold, but I'm in a sweater and I can bear it. It's getting pretty bad, but in a few days we'll be home for Thanksgiving break. I'm willing to guess it's like 50 degrees in our apartment.

We live in Connecticut, we're students. It's 30 degrees out right now. This is... safe, right? We won't wake up dead unless it gets REALLY cold out, right?

Erm, if you freeze into a human popsicle you probably wouldn't wake up period :p. But look on the bright side, at least it'll be a painless death.

I didnt use my heat one winter because I had a wall mounted unit and it was ridiculously expensive to operate. I live in Virginia though so its not as cold as Conneticut. I would sleep with a sleeping bag and a blanket and wore sweats and a sweater.

Okay well the worst part about the whole ordeal is waking up in the morning... it seems to take longer than normal to "warm up". But we're still living comfortably. But ~50 degrees is still fine for living in, right? It's not like we can see our breath.

And Lonyo, come on.. I'm not dumb. If I were dumb you'd instead be reading a post entitled "Me and my roommate made a pact to never buy food again... EDIT: i'm eating my dead roommate's face"

Way back when, I had a shltty slumlord. The house used dead rats as insulation. Electric baseboard heat. It was miserable. But then we learned we only paid electric, and he paid gas. We then hooked a fan above the kicthen door, and turned on the gas range on medium and roasted the next months on his bill.

Dangerous? Yes
Smart? Well, we lived and saved big $$$, so YES.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the pipes freezing for this reason. If your thermostat goes low enough though, I'd set it to turn on if the temperature gets REALLY low.

Living without heat all winter is doable, just wear sweatshirts and sweatpants and use lots of blankets. It's your hands that will be annoying, it's hard to type when your hands are freezing.

buy a few athlon 1.4ghz thunderbirds and visit the DC forum, they will give you some nice applications to turn up the heat in your house.

Set your thermostat to around 40 degrees. That way as others pointed out your pipes won't freeze. That would be expensive and bad for your neighbors as well. Otherwise freeze your butts off! :p

Well, it's obvious you won't have to worry about any brain damage from it.

As a 1.4Ghz Thunderbird owner, I must commend you for such a brilliant idea.

A few students in Dunedin, New Zealand spent a winter in a flat that was on average several degrees colder than a fridge. I don't think any of them died.

Nobody bothers with heating over here for some reason.

Edit: not just some, most. Ya wimps.

The quality of our accommodation is also extremely poor. Last year, a study found that the average temperature inside student flats was well below the level recommended by the World Health Organisation, was frequently colder than the outside temperature, and was often lower than 2 degrees ? colder than the inside of your fridge. Two of my friends have such a damp flat that a crop of clover is growing through the floor of their lounge and flourishing under their table.
