I was getting into my truck after work and a co-worker noticed my radar detector on my dash. He said "ya know having one of those will get you in trouble." I said "how I hardly speed, I am a safe driver, and i have a right to have one." After several minutes of arguing with this guy I pulled out the manual to the detector and showed him that I have the right to send and receive under any frequency i desired.<---- Edit: this is what the law states That ended the conversation and i sped off (LMAO by the way). Anybody own any touchy items/ gadgets like mine that raise a question?

i'm just impressed that conversation lasted several minutes.

As for the original question, no, however my dad calls my television a "white elephant" since it's big haha. I don't think he's ever bought anything larger than 27in.

About the only controversial item I own.

Wrong...

Receiving should be fine, sending absolutely isn't, breaking encryption isn't (which I don't agree with... but that's how it is).

Unless it's WWII and you aren't white. Then the fed comes around and cuts out the shortwave coils from your radio. lol :)

There are quite a few regulations on sending transmissions. Most are for specific uses and the rest is restricted to the amount of power you're emitting. I'm not sure what frequency a radar detector would be emitting, if any. Radar detectors are illegal in some states but where it is legal, it'd probably be harder to talk yourself out of a ticket if the cop saw you have one.

To tell you the truth, it's a priveledge, not a right. You were granted a priviledge to have a radar detector for your personel use. You are not entitled to any rights granted by the constitution to have 1. Just as I was granted a priviledge to use certain frequencies in the amateur radio bands to transmit on them by the FCC. I don't have a right to them. Matter of fact my license comes up for renewal next June. Now gun ownership is a right enumerated by the 2nd amendment in the constitution. There are differences between rights and priviledges in which priviledges can be taken away.

No, you do not have the right to transmit under any frequency desired. In fact, radar jammers are illegal in all 50 states per federal restrictions on transmissions. Your co-worker is more correct than you. Fail.

I believe it is just Virginia and DC that doesn't allow radar detectors in passenger vehicles; there are more restrictions on laser jammers (VA, CO, and a few others don't allow them) and for commercial vehicles. Low-quality detectors are known to emit transmissions, at least some of those transmissions being on bands detectable by other RD's, and there may be others that nobody really bothers to sniff for.

You may be allowed to have it, but if a cop pulls you over and sees it I doubt he'll feel inclined to let you off with a warning.

Ahh, amateur technology.

You don't want to detect radar or laser. No point in that.

What you need is the EDO AN/ALQ jammer pod....now acquired by ITT. Not only can this thing send a giant middle finger to his radar gun, it will also shut down every police radio for miles. Thats what you are looking for. Mount it on your roof rack like a whale penis.

What if you only have room for an elephant penis?

I wonder how many watts something like that would be putting out.

"The AN/ALQ-99 has a maximum power output of 10.8 kW...It uses a ram air turbine to supply its own power." :Q
