My report.. used non Fram oil filter and non generic oil for first time. Changed it yesterday after 7k miles.

Well, after reading so much against Fram and how bad those filters are, I decided to change my oil and use a non Fram filter.

I went for an AC/Delco filter (GM car) and Castrol GTX oil.

Well, 2 months and 7000 miles went by and I changed my oil yesterday. From what I saw the oil held up much better then the Wal Mart brand SuperTec I had been using for the past 7 years. The liquid was still flowing very well and it did not have the thick consistancy I am used to seeing when I change my oil. I wonder if this had more to do with the better filter or the better oil...

So, I think I will be staying away from Fram from now on and going for non generic oil as well.

While the supertec oil may suck the wal-mart brand of oil filter is actually pretty good.

I've gone to using full synthetic for both cars in the last year. The place I take it uses Wix filters so I have no complaints.

If the oil meets the SAE standards for my car I'm going to use it. Brand names are hype.

No offense but you changed 2 (Oil and filter) things, not just 1 (oil)

I do not like castrol as the polymers thicken up much faster and are more likely to break down.

But I do agree, never use Fram oil filters.

I think HIS reference was to using Reg oil, NOT a TRUE Syn. Castrol Syntec is NOT a True 100% Syn.

My old truck gets it oil done every 3K (Mobil 20W50) and my parents Z28 is 6K (Mobil1 10W30)

Just curious - why do you change it every 3K? Isn't that more marketing gimmick than actual need?

Every 3k is worthless.

1) It's a gimmick.

2) I would need to change my oil almost every month.

3) New cars can run a long time on oil.. hell, my manual says I can go 12k if I am not a hard driver and the oil change light sensor never goes off.

I never said Castrol Syntec either.. I said Castrol GTX, the normal 10w-30 stuff.

Every 3K is NOT a gimmick. A lot of times when you change oil it is not because it has gone bad but vecause of the particles in it. Also look at how many lawauits have been brought against jeep, honda, toyota, etc... about their engines slugging up and then the company saying THEY should have changed their oil more often.

NOW if you drive mostly highway miles and don't have a turbo or drive really hard then yes going longer might be ok.

And my oil comments were not to you, but just to warn you I hope you don;t keep you car over 100K. I have broken down enough engines that ran ONLY castrol and it was a sludge fest.

New GM's vehicle has oil life monitor. Would you trust them or just stick with the regular 3K change interval?

There is NO magic sensor that can tell you the true life/quality of the oil. That is just a dummy switch that comes on at certain milage.

Do 3K IF you use reg. oil and drive mostly city miles.

If using Syn. and/or do mostly highway miles and are easy on the car then go longer

If I did 3000 mile auto changes I would change my oil about once a month. There is no need for that. As rufruf said, there is an oil monitor. I go every 7000 miles or until that thing goes off, whichever goes first.

No one belives in the 3000 mile change any more except for those brainwashed by Fram and the oil change places.

my manual states
3k if heavy intown/city driving
5k if mix of city/highway driving
6-7k if mostly highway driving.

I have 3 mechanics in my family. they all said the same thing.
I usually change mine at 4-5k depends on how much city driving i do.
