first a little about myself...i happen to be a Coptic Egyptian American...I'm Coptic orthodox (very similar to Greek orthodoxy), but was born in Alexandria. Many members of my extended family have been persecuted in Egypt for not succumbing to Islam...they're considered "infidels," although the Koran supposedly views Christians and Jews as less "bad" than members of other religions that came after Islam. Anyway, getting to the point, I've explained a bit about myself to show you that I've had firsthand experience w. fundamental islam. It's nothing like our mentality, and sticking to extremely liberal/overly humanitarian practices in dealing with these people will be a fatal mistake.
Osama bin Laden is already a living martyr in the Islamic world. Throwing him in prison will ONLY STRENGTHEN their cause. I agree heavily w. NetGuySC...Bin Laden in jail could potentially do more harm than bin Laden in Afghanistan and definately worse than Bin Laden dead. As much as actually torturing him would bring some kind of feeling of retribution, the only postive end it would serve is in interrogation. However it's highly unlikely he'll say a word about anything. He'll gladly die first (although we can be sure he'd rather be wearing some C4 and be in times square when he dies). Anyway, Israel has a policy of pinpoint killing; they find out who's plotting and executing the terrorism and they send a couple of Apache copters to their front door w. and drop a couple of missles up their a$$es. America MUST adopt a similar policy. Reason does not work with these people; they revile America and the way it's imposed its values on the rest of the world. They're shocked that Allah would allow them, His chosen children, to be inferior in any way to the infidels, especially the American devil. As MichaelD pointed out in a previous post, they understand only death and violence. Either we accept their ideals and step out of the middle east entirely (i.e. stop helping Israel), or the death will continue.
From my correspondence w. family and friends still in Cairo, I learn that the sentiment there (and pretty much the whole mideast) is essentially that America is just a giant wimp (to put it in nicer terms). We spend all this money on technology, intelligence, counter-intelligence, military etc. and little Osama bin Laden in the mountains of Afghanistan manages to topple the center of freakin global capitalism, and actually STRIKE OUR MILITARY HEADQUARTERS! He's a hero to them, and unless America starts sending a message that these kinds of people are criminals and will be extinguished upon discovery, they will continue to thrive and be exalted, be backed by anti-American govts (don't think for a second that Yaser Arafat and wonderful Saddam didn't play a role in this) and escape. We cannot play the liberal/humanitarian "let's work it out" card here at all. Any more weakness or unsureness on our part will spell more disaster.
Sorry if I wandered a bit, but I hope I (kinda) made my point...
