My real Craigslist selling experience. It's a hoot

I've posted more than a few of my fun interactions over email while dealing with craigslist. Sometimes it goes great! Usually when dealing with furniture or things like aquariums. When dealing with electronics of any sort though.... It rarely goes as smooth.

My recent example is trying to sell a slightly older 55" LCD Sharp TV. It is not an LED LCD, just the old tube lights in there. I barely used it though and got an awesome deal on a LED TV. So I thought I'd sell off the old one to "pay" for the new one. I basically went to craigslist and did a search for the TV or all comparable models and saw not only what the asking prices were, but tried to get info of what recent sold ones went for. Same thing for Ebay. After I that, I knocked off $100 off the LOWEST price and placed the post hoping for a quick sell. Yah, it didn't work. Highest offers I got were at $200 for the TV.... which I rather donate it and get more back off my taxes for that price 🙂 Which is basically a better decision to make if I have to sell for that low.

I had someone claiming to be a PhD in television displays and how it wasn't worth more than $200 right now. I barely could contain my laughter at the idiot.

yeah, and 15 years on Ebay with 1500 feedback, all 100%. That includes the guy I spent lots of time with over a 40.00 CPU sale when he called me a thief when the CPU was "bad". I had to teach him what a bios was, and how to update it to recognize the new CPU..
 
Selling things on craigslist usually ends up with dealing with a hundred morons for each good person you sell to.

They constantly don't read the posts and lowball. I've had people call me with trades when my title says "Text Only, no trades".

15 years of selling on Ebay and yet you seem surprised at the knowledge level of many buyers? Seriously?

That's like walking into a crack house and expecting the King's English and Robert's Rules of Order to pertain.

Hey, if you're just blowing off steam, ok. But the way you were so passive-aggressive in the convo you posted in your OP says you're either socially clueless or you like being kind of a dick. <shrug>

I would have stopped talking to the guy once he asked me where the video and audio jacks are. At that point, you can be pretty certain that the guy is clueless.

Even if you sold the motherboard to him, odds are that he's going to blow it up by plugging something in the wrong way and demand a refund.

I'd agree, except for one thing. It's called google. It changed the world..and helped the NSA, but that's another topic...
 
If you do not trust that people are generally good, have patience, and a sense of humor, then selling on cragslist is probably not for you.

The last crazy one i can remember was a dude who called about a car I had for sale. First call he says he can't drive a stick. A couple questions about the car, yada yada. Second call he wants to make sure it's a stick and wants me to come pick him up at the train station. Because I live 5 minutes from the station I say fine but I'm not teaching him how to drive a stick.

Third call he wants to know the train schedule and i tell him I can't help him with that.

4th call he wants to know if I will accept Euro's. LOL, really? Dude, stop calling me I wouldn't sell you the car now for double the price.

My buddy just sold his old SUV on Craigslist with exactly the same results. People would lowball him like crazy. People would show up and offer hundreds or thousand(s) less. Finally he started giving in because he wanted to move it, and they'd show up without cash after negotiating for $900 off. Ridiculous. I don't think I will ever sell anything on Craigslist.
 
I've only sold 1 thing on craigslist. It was a washer/dryer combo that I bought from a coworker for $75 as a pair. He just wanted to get rid of them. I sold both on craigslist after using it a year for $100. Some ladies responded and come to check it out.

They get to my apartment, and started crapping on me about how they were just average washers/dryer. They weren't front loading. They were white. Just complaining. I assume they'd think I'd just lower the price for them because they are bitching. So I let them rant and rave for a few minutes. They ran out of things to complain about.

So I said "Do you want them or not?"

They said "Yes..." Then started grumbling about now they'd have to move them into their truck. I assume to see if I would help them load it. I just sat there though and let them deal with it. I guess that's what happens when you BITCH... If they would have just said "Hey! These are heavy. Can you help us out?" But no instead they want to complain and hope I'll jump in and save the day.

It was still fun though.
 
I had to sit and wonder who the idiot was, and whether you were the seller or the buyer, because near the end the buyer seemed more reasonable.

You seriously couldn't determine he wanted to know if it had onboard audio / video? I understood what he meant without his clarification.
 
I actually had a guy this week write me a check for $2k over what I listed my Xbox 360 at. He apologized profusely, and even let me split the overage with him, so I only gave him back $1k!

What a dope that moron is.
 
He said he made a mistake then said he still wanted it, but you continued to berate him.

bwhahah that is how you handle it.

Only thing i hate is when i get to a spot to trade and if im buying the item is not as they described or edited the pictures. Or the idiots offer me say $50 when we agreed on 100. i just laugh and leave.
 
Buyers on Kijiji and Craigslist are generally morons. You were a little bit hard on the guy, but he should've researched the card first.

With hundreds of ads on craigslist and thousands of motherboards on the market, buyers are more likely to skip over a shitty ad that doesn't have enough information about the product.
