Sometimes when I play games or use Maya on my computer, the ram is silent, but when I'm idle, the ram, or something in the motherboard that's very close to the ram, starts...ringing. It's not very loud but the differences are definately noticeable. I've kind of already habituated to the noise, but is this normal? It doesn't seem to have any effect on the computer though.

almost certainly your power supply. if it isn't, it's probably a capacitor on your motherboard. if your ram actually managed to make a ringing sound (just about impossible), your computer would likely not even boot up. check your power supply more closely next time it happens.

Lol

An old system i was working on had ringing noise to it too, I thought it was a power supply, or the p2 processer, but probably was the hard drive. Never figured it out though as it was working as was so i didnt mess with it. I switched everything but the p2 and the HD with no luck in isolating the noise.

I'm not gonna mess with it now, I just set up my water cooling and the pump makes the same noise so I can't even hear anything but the pump now anyway.

Power supply transistors. They "sing". You probably have very good hearing. I do as well and I hear my PSU "singing" all the time, varying with the amount of work the computer is performing.

It's normal and nothing to be concerned about.

Wow... I new that they did this... But you and the OP can actually HEAR this? WTF! Do you wear hearing aids and don't actually need them?
