If thats the case then don;t get it. As you already know it does not offer a great ride and eats the gas, esp with a auto.

Get a SUV if you want a auto. The new Saturn is nice and just about every company has some type of SUV that may fit the bill.

Have 01' Jeep Wrangler Sahara, viewable in the sig!

Auto IMO kill the fun outta driving one, so you gotta get Manual!

Umm whatelse... oh yeah, the tops are bia to interchange, and its loud on the highway, and as you know, it's got a smooth ride comparable to the Maybach.
Maybe you should think about purchasing a used one?

Yea, Im considering look at a used one. Everyone keeps telling me that if Im looking to buy an automatic, the wrangler inst for me.

I'd like a Hummer...H3 even, but it's out of my price range.

My parents just purchased exactly what you are looking at (though fully loaded with a hard top). My thoughts pretty much mirror yours. I HATE, absolutely HATE the interior. The average truck feels much more rugged than that vehicle.

(I also thought it felt way too loose, but that could simply be its size).

Your right about everything. But this is going to be my daily driver, and I have a manual now. Most of my driving is city driving, and driving a manual in bumper to bumper traffifc sucks!

Agreed. I plan on keeping mine until it turns into dust so I'm not worried about resale. Plus I really wanted the remote start and while it's technically possible to do that w a manual accidentally leaving it in gear tends to cause hilarity (and sometimes serious injury) to ensue.

The TJ auto transmission is a 3-speed, FYI, unless you went with a newer one or Rubicon. It's not that great, but it is TOUGH. Mine was an auto and I preferred it simply because offroading with a stick is a PITA unless you have a hand throttle.

I cannot comment on the 4-speed as I never had any experience with it.

Auto is better for offroad.

And I don't know why you said "H3 even". The H3 is the best off road vehicle in their lineup, unless for some reaason you consider the Humvee to be part of the line.

Edit: By the way, with a JK, you can fit 33" tires without a lift, and 35" with a small 2" lift.

Yea, after researching the Wrangler, I came to that conclusion.

If it wasnt for that interior though, I would probably take the new Jeep. The lack of power from the V6 is something I could live with.

I have a had an '89 Wrangler Sahara for the almost 2 years. Put over 30,000 miles on it. Soft top and a lot of highway miles.. Traveled over 700 miles this weekend alone. It's very rugged inside. Everything's waterproof (I left the top off in the rain a few times).

The 89 has the 4.2 carb and leaf springs. I still get 20 mpg (highway of course) with it. It's awsome. I am definitely getting a hard top the next go-around.

I have been trolling www.jk-forum.com drooling over the show&tell pics. I want one of the new JK soooo bad....

I agree with sarcasticdwarf that the interior of the new jeeps suck (and the guys at jk-forum confirm that)

Good choice with the jeep as long as you don't do what the guys at atlanta dealership did

The 4 door models are very nice. They remind me of hummer H3's. They're just out of my price range. The one downside of the 4 door is that they look big and powerful, but they have the same 3.8 v6 engine that the 2 door models have. 202HP felt like 130HP.

They are shaped like bricks and weigh over 4,000lbs. You aren't going to make them speed demons unless you put in 4.88s or supercharge them :p.

EDIT: And try to think about how fast the 4 cylinder TJ was. 70mph was almost impossible unless you were going downhill or had a strong wind at your back.

My grandfather had a 98 4.0 TJ. That thing would cook pretty good. I had it to 105.

Now my 4 banger YJ riding on 33's was awful slow. Lots of zip through 3rd gear. 4th and 5th were almost useless unless going down hill. There were a few times where I got stuck in 3rd gear floored @ 45 mph going up hills. One time I had to back it off to 2nd. The line of cars behind me wasn't happy. I was having fun, though.

Jeeps are a rip off. $21 grand for a Wrangler? It's real small, underpowered and a cheap interior. You could get a small pickup with the same features and more room for like $15 grand.

Yeah, because that's a normal cross shop

Jeeps have excellent resale, BTW.

I was a little disapointed with the Jeep Wrangler test drive. So I was thinking of other cars in that price range or cheaper that I might like. I've decided to go test drive a new VW Rabbit. I'm not sure if I'll test drive the auto or the 5 speed; probably the automatic though. I told myself I wasnt going German, but Im just curious. I might really like the car. What do you guys think of the VW Rabbit? I know the Wrangler and the Rabbit can't be compared and it's a little crazy that my interest has shifted from a jeep wrangler to a VW Rabbit.

Unless you are commuting more than 30 miles a day.. get the Jeep.

I had a 97 Wrangler. Damn if it wasn't for commuting, I would still have it.

I have a 95 Wrangler 5-speed w/ 4 cyl. Hard to compare it to a much newer version. One thing I can say is that it's an awesome vehicle to have when you have to do a lot of parallel parking. It can fit in tight spaces many other vehicles have to pass up.

My daily driver is a stick, but I would buy a auto Jeep - they are FAR easier to live w/ off road. I have been in the situation of stalling 3/4 of the way up a steep hill and having to be winched up - that day all the autos in the group made it, only about half the sticks.

I hate the way Wranglers drive ... very finicky, and they seem to have an over steer problem.

So what about the VW Rabbit? I didnt want to start a new thread about cars....what are your guy's general feelings about the VW Rabbit?
