My PSP review

Finally got a chance to spend some extensive time with a friend's PSP.

Overall, I give it a 9/10.

The screen is excellent.
I watched some UMD trailers and it was DVD like quality.
He encoded Family Guy and Naruto episodes at low quality and it was obviously lesser quality, but that's to be expected. Still good for passing time if you use public transportation to commute to school or work.
Surprisingly, it doesn't get too hot during usage.
I don't think movie UMD's is going to catch on given the proprietary format.
They should've put the UMD media into MD form factor so you could at least put some CD quality music on it for those who have MD recorders.
Too many media formats Sony... remember betamax?

MP3 player.
Obviously this is not a direct Ipod competitor since it uses flash media and is not a dedicated player.
One thing I did not like was the inability to view other tracks while one is currently playing. Maybe I didn't explore all the options. Let me know if this is a possibility.
The remote control is another neat feature which makes for more convenience on the go.

Photo viewer.
He had some photos and wallpaper on there as well. Photo viewing on the beautiful screen is another plus.
Everything was squeezed onto a 1 GB memory stick, so about 4 TV episodes, a hundred or so MP3's and quite a few pics.

And of course there's the gaming.
The only game he had on was MGS. Didn't get a chance to play in depth but the graphics are PS2-like. I had time on another friend's PSP and he had some cartoony golf game which was fun in the 10 minutes I had with it.

Lastly, with the new software update, there's the web browsing.
It connected to my wifi router instantaneously and browsing was quite intuitive despite the lack of a mouse and keyboard.
You enter URL's just like you would text msg using a cell phone and the shoulder buttons act as back/foward buttons on a real browser.
The analog stick serves as the mouse, but the awkward positioning of the stick cramps up your thumb after extended use.
All the content on the page doesn't fit perfectly on the screen so there's a lot of side scrolling, and the formatting is a bit scrambled. Hopefully a new revision on the browser will fix up some of the HTML interpretation.
Pages load a bit slow though, especially graphic intensive sites. Could be the 32 MB (?) built in memory. Could use a bit more to speed thigns up.
I think this is a great feature if you are close to free hot spots or someone's unprotected WAP

Two changes I would make are the position of the analog stick, and a touch screen which would help tremendously in the browsing aspect and perhaps the whole interface (scrolling through folders of mp3's and movies).
That would definitely seal the deal.

Given $300 to spend on a media player, I would definitely choose the PSP over the iPod.
To me it's an all-in-one device and gaming is just a bonus feature.
Heck, I'd probably pick one up just for movies and mp3's and not get any games.

I looked into it and it's cool but a huge money pit so I found it to be not worth it in the end.

M4H lent me his for a month or so a while back... at first, I loved it... but after a while I never even touched it...

Screen was awesome though - and with the right game I can see myself being hooked... :)

nice machines!

$240 for the PSP, $60-80 for a 1 GB memory stick.
Not too expensive if all you do is play media.
Games are optional to me, which I probably won't go crazy over.

And it looks so much cooler than the iPod

$300 for a 1GB mp3 player? Sounds a little steep to me.

This is what I got for a media player. The screen is way small compared to the PSP but I don't really mind it. The whole thing is the same size as an iPod and 20 gigs is really nice. Also supports many formats too.

I guess, but what did people used to pay for a 4 GB iPod Mini with shoddy battery life and poor audio quality? $250?

It's comparable IMO.
You get an awesome LCD and the ability to play movies and view photos.

Looks nice for the price, esp the 20 GB hd.
Pics of the screen in action look barely acceptable though, and games look like a joke.

The screen of the PSP is its main selling point. It's just so pimp.

When the PSP first came out, I was a skeptic thinking it's overpriced and novelty.
Now I think it's actually useful and a good bargain.

I am consdering trading in my PS2+games, and GB Advance+games for a PSP. Since I don't play my PS2 much since i got the xbox, I think I would be more able to find time to use the PSP. It all depends on what they will give me as trade for my stuff. I'm sure it will be kinda low, if it is, then I guess I will just sell the stuff, and maybe still get a PSP, maybe not. Whats a good game to get for it? I want madden, but its not out yet.

Gotta give more time for more games to come out. Of the ones I've played, the best rating I'd hand out is "decent."

Would buying a used one at like gamestop be wise. I mean its guarenteed for 30 days, so itf it has dead pixels or whatever, it can be returned. But then again its used. But really whats the original warranty length anyways, 90 days like the PS2???

Well I went ahead and pciked up a PSP this weekend. I asked the guy if it came with the spiderman 2 movie, and he said yes. But I made the mistake of not checking for the sticker syaing that it does. And lo and behold, no spider man 2. I am wondering if its worth it to return it for one that comes with spiderman 2. It doesn't appear to have any dead pixels that I noticed. It seemed pretty good to me, aside from the low sound output while watching video clips fromt he sampler UMD. But the game sound was okay. I got twisted metal head on.

Anything I need to know about it before deciding if its worth returning just for the SP2 movie? Do I need to go online and download any new firmware or anything for it, and if so what do I need to do that? Do I need the USB cable for it, or can I just copy the files/fimware or whatever to the Memory stick and then load it from there?

If I was going to buy a handheld GAMING console (none of this crap about PS3 not being a gaming machine) the games would be my utmost concern. I have no desire to watch movies on a screen that small, and my iPod satisfies my music needs. Eventually I'll probably get a DS or a PSP depending entirely on which one is the first to get games that don't suck.

If you're concerned solely about good games, save your money and get an gb advance sp.

Ya, I was also thinkinig about the PSP as a small DVD watcher for my anime. I don't really like the PSP games taht much, I've tried them, but the huge screen is awesome. You can't read subtitles with the small 2inch players, but I would think subtitltes are readable with the PSP. I'm still waiting for it to drop to 200 bucks, and for 1gb memory sticks to go down to 50.

The DS may not have loads of games, but the ones it has are great. And it plays all the old GBA games as well.
