And this is why I'm just going to get a Wii. Good chance I can walk up the street to my local BestBuy and just pick one up without having to camp out on release day.

But, by then, enough will be produced to eliminate the shortage.

supply won't meet demand until well after the holiday season.

Why do the mfr's do this every year? Do they like to see other people profiting on ebay??? I dont get it.. They know when the release date is well in advance, why n ot make more?

Hum... I've been thinking the same thing. I live in a college town with 2 super walmarts, a CC, BB, sams, etc... I'm thinking I'm gonna camp out at the one walmart that's right next to sams (where I have a membership). If for some reason I can't snag one from walmart, I can atleast try sams come 8am or whenever they open. It's freezing outside... but I have a parka... so it's all good hehe.

On another note, does anyone know the breakdown of the core vs the premium system (I think that's what sony is calling them - as MS did)? If a walmart is expected to get say 10 units... will it be like a 50:50 split, or will they all be premium systems (saving the core system shipments for after the holidays)? Either way... that sob is going right on e-bay to make me some cash for a 360 hehe...

I made a complaint about that in one of the other fifty PS3 threads we have on AT.

They plan the development cycle for these things years in advance, and it always seems that every holiday season they can never get enough out the door when Xmas shopping begins.

Also, I think that LikeLinus is not exactly Like Linus. Linus payed attention in school. Especially math. ;)

Yeah I figured this is how it would be, which is good, as I plan on buying the premium system. I believe the 360 launch was similar too, with most stores recieving more premium systems than cores. Really, for $600 the system isn't a bad deal (when you take into account how much sony spent to develop it. Then again that depends on blue ray catching on in the market. If it doesn't, the price is less impressive. But yeah, I think if I manage to get one, the e-bay proceeds are going to go towards 360 + Wii... or possibly a nice 42ish inch plasma/LCD...

Wuzup101, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but being in a college town will be a huge disadvantage come launch day.

You have a disproportionately higher population of tech-crazed, video-game loving, profiteering, unemployed geeks and frat boys in your town vying for the same PS3s.

Hope you plan on lining up really, really early.

Did it occur to you that problems in manufacturing can't be predicted since nobody has invented a crystal ball? ;)

Of course Sony wanted to make more, you'd have to be mentally deficient to think not having enough is in their favour in any way :p

It's a bit like going to the grocery store and finding that they've run out of milk due to a trucking strike, then throwing a hissy fit and demanding to know why the the dairies didn't plan for...yeah...wait for it...an unexpected event

He doesn't even respond to his botched Mathematics.

Walmart sounds like the best bet to me too.

Since you were making little cute faces the whole time I can assume you were being a wise-elbow and not flaming. That is good.

I work in the chip industry and your statement about "can't be predicted" is just plain wrong. You can actually predict most problems with excellent accuracy.
And it is not at all like the dairy industry. I can only guess you never worked in either one. Animal products have a hundred different issues from manufactured goods not the least of which is cows are not nearly as reliable as FAB tools. Milk also goes bad whether or not it gets used. Finished chips dont have that problem.
You also completely ignored my point about the long term cycle planning of console systems.
But I wont pee-pee slap you anymore because I like you more than I like taffy, and boy do I love my taffy.

I still say that if you are planning on camping out on the night before you are going to be sorely disappointed. It sounds like a 3 day camp out is going to be the norm for the PS3. Good Luck!

sony had true problems on the line, but also.. when there is high demand, the product doesn't sit on the shelves, and when no product is on the shelves, there is more demand created automatically. when someone finally sees one sitting on a shelf, there is a better chance a certain person will buy it, even when that certain person might not have bought it at launch had it been readily available.

Fine. Sony were too ambitious in their launch date (which if you recall was even put back a few times). Manufacturing problems that they had failed to consider intervened. They didn't have enough stock at launch to meet demand.

Their long term planning cycle wasn't accurate enough that far out i guess. But then, if an IP issue had come up at the last minute, even tho the PS3s might have been ready to roll out the door, that would have stopped them too, so i don't think i'm entirely wrong in saying that unexpected events can and do disrupt product launches...

You're correct tho, i've worked with livestock but not in manufacturing )

Maybe because I was doing things around the house and not online? I have a wife and two kids, sometimes it's hard to pay total attention to ATOT. Such as life.

It was a long day at work and for some reason I had 100 stuck in my head. Sorry! Big deal.
