My problems with modern gaming

I've got a little problem, and it stems from the fact that I'm just not a millionaire. I can't just buy every game that comes out although I'd like to. Because of this, I feel like I may miss out on some great multiplayer experiences. It seems that people just move on from games quicker than can be. As soon as a new game comes out, they dump their time off from the last great game, and jump into this new great game...

Perhaps its just this time of year, but lets look at this example. Halo 3 came out. I didn't buy it immediately like most people on my friends list but waited a week. By that time, several people had beaten the game, played some MP and had decided that it was time to look forward to The Orange Box... then after Orange Box dropped, people were in a tizzy over TF2 and I was busy playing Halo 3... So I bought Orange Box just in time for Call of Duty 4 to hit, and everyone switched to that.

Its a vicious cycle. I'll get Call of Duty 4 when I can hit a Toys R Us, and I'm sure people will have moved onto Rock Band, or Mass Effect, or Army of Two whenever that comes out... or... well, you get the idea.

I love games, but unlike most, I've found I like spending time with them instead of rushing through. Dammit, will you people SLOW THE HECK DOWN?

Thank you.

Thank the companies that put all their best games out in the last three months of every year... and those of us that buy them. :p

The problem seems more that you have short-attention-span friends :)

Try only buying every other game that they do, but buy them at the same time instead of a week later.

It isnt that they come too fast, its that they all come out at the same time - oct-nov. Its as if companies think we dont play games all year.

My problem is I either have to buy the games the week they come out or 9 months down the line in order to get a good deal on them.

An example is Assassin's Creed. $39 at Fry's but I probably won't play it for a few months as I am already playing TF2, Crysis and CoD4.

Why would you want to keep up with hardcore gaming nerds? Buying games months after their release is common.

I love it. Bring 'em all on. During the summer I'm outside enjoying the weather and baseball so I don't game...but come winter in NYC when it sucks to be outside its gaming time.

Busy with Mario Galaxy (95 stars...almost there...) then comes Mass Effect, Crysis, Assassin's Creed and The Witcher. BRING 'EM ON BABY.

I hate exclusives, I hate having to buy every console from every company or else I'm gonna miss out on a fun game which is why I still haven't moved to next gen ><

You just have to pick and choose. THere will always be people playing MP and SP will always be around.

A solid MP will always have a solid MP base. It may fluctuate a bit with releases but in the long run a good MP game will always have people playing. CoD4, Halo 3, and TF2 will more than likely all have enough players to keep it interesting for a few years.

Isn't that even less productive?

I hear ya, James. I recently was thinking back on my Quake 1, Quake 2 and Quake 3 days and how I played each of those for years. I don't mean that I casually played them a few hours a month--I played almost everyday (probably, on average, 5-6 days a week) for 4-6 hours.

It was free MP, it was fun, and I played with the same people. Hell, I even played the entire series with 2-3 of the same guys. With Quake 2, I started a clan called Warbreed (that's where "warcrow" comes from, since our tag was {WaR} and my name was Crow), and it was great playing with the same guys, teaming up, and challenging other clans. *sigh* Fond memories.

But now-a-days there are so many great games with awesome MP aspects to it, it makes it tough to settle.

Besides, dont we all have A.D.D. anyway? :)

This year has been jam packed full of great releases. It isn't just the past few months. You are not the only one who is having this issue. I could probably get through all the games I want but I wouldn't be able to take my time and really get the full experience which is a waste to me.

How about a game rental service? I think GameFly does that and maybe there's others? I've been considering it because new 360 games are $60 + tax and they don't give much on trade-ins. The only thing holding me back is I only play 1 day per week so it's probably not worth it. :-/

I still haven't played most of those games. I'm probably getting La Boite Orange for the PC later next week, but other than that I just don't have the funds to put into new games right now.

I agree. I usually bide my time before buying new games, and so the last game I purchased before Call of Duty 4 was about 3 or so months before, when I got Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. Frankly, I like the graphics of older games better than the new shiny graphics. I dig the Sims, and San Andreas. New games have better graphics, which many seem to be wetting their pants about, but the storyline and fun factor isn't there in all of them. Hell, I don't even like the way the character models are all shiny and there is always a sort of haze around everything, like it Oblivion. Eh, to each his own I guess.

You mentioned Oblivion. If you can look past the outdated graphics, but want to play the game that Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was over-hyped to be, then hunt down the PC version of Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall (1996). It is what a CRPG were meant to be, instead of some watered down click-monkey game meant to meet the market demands of the A.D.D.-stricten kiddies that are discribed in the OPs first post. I even think that The Elder Scrolls 1: Arena (1994) was released as freeware if you want to play the original, but I think that Daggerfall is considered by many to be the best of series.

Since you admit to logging 1000+ hours on Quake, I ***SERIOUSLY*** doubt you qualify as having ADD. Maybe an addiction to Video Crack(tm), but not ADD. Now, if you had said:

> Besides, dont we hardcore AT gamers all have Addictions to Video Crack(tm), anyway? :)

then I would have totally agreed.
