My Prescott is going by the way side

My a couple of you read my thread on the temps of my 2.8E, thanks for the help but nothing seems to help, and the temp shut downs are on my last nerve. So I am replacing it. I currently have a Abit Max3 board (875 north and ICH5R south) - very nice board, except it might be the culpert on the temp problem....

Anyway to shorten this I was thinking of picking up a P4 3.2c or going with a whole new motherboard and CPU combo, either the AMD 3200 64 and the ASUS K8V SE DELUXE or the 146 opteron an the ASUS SK8V. The problem I have with the 3200-64 is the single channel RAM, and the problem I have with the 146 opteron is the lack of up gradeablity after the 939 chips are released. The problem with the 3.2 is the lack of 64bit future.

If anyone has any input (good or bad) feel free.

What lack of upgradeability are you talking about for the Opterons? Even after socket 939 comes out, the Opterons will be remaining on socket 940. There have been no plans announced to migrate Opteron to socket 939, and it will most likely remain socket 940 for some time to come.

The P4 loves the dual channel ram, but it makes hardly any difference to the Athlon64. Check the benchmarks showing the 3400+ and the FX51, and you will see very little difference except in a couple of benchmarks. Also, its not really dual channel, its going from one HTT to 3.

So right now the Athlon64 3400+ would probably be what you want, and the K8V Deluxe (don't know much about the SE) is a great board. Make sure to get 1 gig of PC3500 CAS2, if you don;t already have that in your P4. The Athlon64 really loves low latency ram. I had a problem with OCZ PC4200 EL, but Hyperx PC3500 works fine, and I think Mushkin Level1 PC3500 also.

OK so after the FX goes to 939, opteron will stay 940? If that is the case it seems the 146 is the best all around option right now. Does any one know if there are any problems with the 146 in games, apps, ...etc. And am I correct in thinking that the 146 is a FX-51 but 200MHz slower.

Thanks

I'll take your old Prescott! 😀 But on a less serious note I think that either going to a fast Northwood or an Athlon64 would be a good move. Since they have just as good performance and a lot less heat.

No, Opterons are just fine, they use registered memory which is more exspensive and a little slower (5%??). That is why I suggested the Athlon64 3400+.

You don't need ECC ram you need Registerd.

But either way yes it is more expensive and a little slower I would go with the Athlon 64 instead of the opterton to save some dough.

So almost everyone says the 64 over the opteron. So what is the beig deal with the dual channel RAM? I understand that you guys are saying that the Athlon doesn't benifit from it, so why is the FX-51 (53) AMD top CPUs? The FX-51 runs at 2.2 just like the 3400+, are these two almost the same CPUs as far as proformance goes? Lastly does anyone know if the dual channel RAM will make a difference in the 64 bit mode later.

Sorry for all the dual channel questions, but I've always had a p4 and with them dual channel memory is a major deal.

Thanks

Please go check the benchmarks on the Anand site like I just did. I started to write down the differences, and the 3400+ was beating the FX-51 as many times as the other way around. The differences were so small, it wasn;t worth mentioning.

Again, DUAL CHANNEL FOR ATHLON64 IS NO BIG DEAL.

Yes, they are the same. With the exception of large, dumb tasks (IE, video encoding, rendering, large database lookups), the Opteron and FX benefit at most 5%. ANd most of these tasks are where the P4 does better.
The FX series is top due to speed. The 3700+, when it comes out, will run at the speed of the FX-53. The FX chips are low yield (most chips can't get that high) and taken away from the rest to be sold as premium parts. Then the 3700+ will come in at 2.4GHz, and then the FX-55 at 2.6, and so on.
