My power is out...

Yet I can peruse this forum.

I can take a hot shower.

I can search for women to date.

But soon if this persists my food will perish, i'll only see by candle light and the lack of a working heater means I'll be cold.

This seems like an odd paradox where phone/cell/battery technology has outpaced the electrical grid...

I oddly like power outages, it adds a bit of excitement to a normal day. :p I have 4 hours of run time on my server UPS so as long as it lasts less than that I'm ok. If I need power for anything else I can take out my solar panel and power pack. Eventually I want to setup a permanent solar install though, would be cool to generate my own power even if it's for a smaller load. Don't have room for a big system unfortunately.

Yeah it's neat being on the internet when all the power in your neighborhood is down. Years ago I bought an APC XS 1500 and the external battery. I use to render 3D stuff that took days on my Amiga so power shutdowns would suck if I was at work or out. Still works great.

I was just thinking about solar. I have a small panel for a water pump and thought why isn't more electronic D.C. Where you can just power them from a panel.

Neat. Do you have that Toaster you could get with the Amiga? I mainly used mine to game and draw with a tablet.,

I have a nice mix here. Municipal water, gas heat/stove/water heater, electric of course, and a wood stove. In addition, I have a few dozen candles, and almost a gallon of lamp oil. Not much can happen that'll too adversely affect my life. I kind like when the power goes out. Everything gets quieter, and I can use flame based light, which is my preference aside from expense, and in the summer, heat.

Yep had a toaster and used lightwave. Use to do some event work with the Toaster. But lightwave was so fun.

I can't stand when the power goes out. I don't know how poor bastards live without power, mostly in those countries we rarely talk about and a few that we do.

I lose both my furnace and well pump when the power goes out, so my hot shower would be really short.

My WiFi access point is on UPS, though, so I'll be able to look for "hot girls in my area" for about 45 minutes before the power goes out.

When I was about 19 I had an idea of a network of fiber optics that you plugged into and ran electronics off that. Of course, we are talking about a WHOLE new way of energy here.

I had looked into getting a wood stove once, as I got a power outage in winter and it really did not take long for it to start getting really cold in the house, and got me thinking I'm not all that prepared. They are not cheap though. By the time you factor in the stove itself, the hardware like chimney piping, and the installation (can't really DIY as it has to be certified etc) it's like 5k. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a house project I rather save it, and put it towards a solar system instead. The solar system could double as a UPS to power important loads like the furnace, as I could also have a bank of rectifiers.

For extended outages I could just shut down the servers and other less important stuff to try to conserve battery power. I'd also keep the house rather cool, but at least be able to keep it like 5-10 degrees above freezing. Since we don't get a lot of daylight I don't know if solar would be able to keep up with running the furnace though. Like even if I get a huge battery bank with enough AH capacity, I then need to be able to fully charge it in like 5 hours. The odds of a day+ power outage is pretty slim though. I could always also get a small generator so I could at least run the rectifiers. If I went with a propane one it should be fairly reliable even if not used often.

get one of those small gas fireplaces. pretty easy to vent and can keep you warm in the winter.

and while you're at it connect your gas grill to the natural gas line in your house so you can cook all year round.

:)

I thought of that too but they are super inefficient. Lot of the heat is wasted through the vent. It would be an easy option though. Basically if you can burn yourself on the exhaust, that's waste heat.

I don't bother BBQing in winter. Too much work to have to keep an area clear of snow, and having to put boots on/off every time I want to go out and check on it. Though in a power outage type situation, then I'd probably do that.

the good thing about the grill is not running out of propane. I miss having a house with a grill hooked up to the gas line.

Living on a heavily wooded mountain side, power outages are far to frequent. We didn't loose power yesterday even with 40 - 50 MPH winds, which is really surprising.
Winter the wood stoves keep us warm, and can warm food. Also have resorted to putting food in the back of the SUV in extended outages, in cold weather of course. Can't just put it out on the deck in a cooler due to bears.
Would love to have natural gas for cooking and hot water, but they haven't run it up the mountain.

You guys all as foreign to a generator as the last guy I brought a generator to? He was starting to drag it in to the house and goes oh its gas? Like what you think it runs on electricity?

You mean generators run on electricity? :p

When I was shopping for a house generator they had multi fuel ones where you could run natural gas as well. Since I have a gas line for my furnace and water heater and I had the line capacity I could of done that. Be nice never have to worry about running out to get gas. Dont think I've ever heard of a natural gas outage. Except when a house goes boom.
