Its now 5pm, and the power has gone out about 20-30 times today.... 🙁

Its all stable for 30 minutes, then BAM BAM BAM BAM over and over... Trying to get some work done 🙁

I've never seen power studder like this... It goes on and off like 3-4 times in a row within just a few seconds, then is rock solid for an hour... then again...

Got a APC?

APC is on the Cable Modem/Router/Vonage

Main computer is a laptop and the power cable is plugged into surge

But I use a second 24" lcd as my main display, and that along with my 1tb external keeps flicking off 🙁

I'd disconnect or power off that external to be on the safe side, you never know if the intermittent power losses will cause a problem.

Grrr..... Power is out again.. Been out for the past 30 mins and they don't expect it back on till 8-9pm 🙁

Lets see how long my modem/router/vonage on my APC backup will work 🙂

DAMN YOU FPL! I hope it's not from the high wind penetration you guys have.Texas had rolling blackouts a few weeks back because the wind died suddenly.

My power went of twice yesterday from the very high winds that are likely the cause of your problems. It sounds like the reclosers keep getting triggered or something. Maybe the wind keep blowing something into the line and it arcs over and then the reclosers extinguish the arc, and then the wind comes back up and knocks it out again an hour later. Or it could just be the utility is turning it off and on because they are testing other places where trees have fallen down or something. Can't really blame the power company for downed trees and high winds and stuff.

I remember FPL and all the outages for no apparent reason. I see they haven't changed. Even when there was a reason (Hurricane) it was forever getting service restored. Then there were all the intermittent interruptions which sorely tested my battery backup. Don't miss any of that.

This is by far, the most likely scenario -- assuming he's on a circuit with some overhead. I was in distribution for a while and there was this one neighborhood complaining about frequent momentaries -- I remember looking over it closely and recommending that a few trees in their backyards (that were right up against the lines) be agressively trimmed, and adding a couple of fuses so that when one of the idiots refused to trim their trees, a windy day wouldn't put the lights out for that whole area.

maybe there's a storm near by?

or possibly electrical repair work is going on and you are seeing their handiwork?

either way, it sucks.

The storms in the south have caused lots of problems with the electric grid.
I heard one of the guys talking about the electric grid in the USA
He said it was like toothpicks held together with spit.
He also said its going to be a lot worse as time goes on.
The lines are old and companies don't like to spend to increase capacity.

Well its perfectly clear here and hardly a breeze at all, with a small number (3200 homes) in the area down, I don't think its related to the weather around the rest of the country. I'm just gonna go with my power company sucks.

Forgot to add that if your in a situation where the power is cycling off and on many times, your best to just unplug/turn off your stuff.
Even if its connected to a ups.
The rapid cycling of power causes more failure in equipment than power surges from lightning.

Actually, companies have no problem spending to increase capacity. If they can demonsrate that it will improve reliability / service to the community to your local PUC, they can put the cost in your rate base (i.e. have everyone pay for it) and are guaranteed to be paid back plus a few percent profit for their work. In return, they also can't RAISE prices without approval of your local PUC, so no gouging either. Power companies have strong incentives to keep the grid going, and reliable.
