I have a tiny little fishtank in my room, only 10 gallons. I have 7 fish in it, 4 white clouds, 2 miny catfish, and 1 pleko (algae eater). Well last night i discovered there was some white fuzz on the back of one of my catfish (where he had a fin) and one of his fins was eaten away down to the bone. He was swimming funny and looked like he was dying. So i get home this morning, all of his fins are eaten away by some kinda fuzz and he's barely living... WTF happened? Anyone know of some kinda fish disease that does this? He's been fine up until I guess last night.

catfish are meant to be eaten. jk

Sorry to hear about your diseased fish. Fuzzy stuff. All I can think of is possibly ick. But that doesn't eat away at the fins. It's just this fuzzy slimy coating that grows on the fish. Have you asked your local fish store?

That's what i'm thinking, so I kinda wanna figure out what it is so my other catfish doesn't die. Looks like some kinda fuzzy bacteria maybe? Its white and puffy. I've had these catfish for over 2 years, the only things that actually survive for awhile :p

sounds to me like fin rot. Text

or

[edit]
Most likely fish fungus. Fish fungus appears as grey/white patches on the skin or gills that resemble tufts of cotton-wool.

You're right jlee, it is most definately what you posted in your second link. His skin looks exactly like the pic underneat the fuzz.

Go to a local fish store - NOT a WalMart or Petco or place like that. Tell them what you got and they'll give you some meds.

Are you sure someone just wasn't being rude and ate his fin and what you see is some flesh hanging on?

Yeah, cause last night he had 2 fins up front and one was being eaten from the side, now he has none but the tail.

Maybe one of the other fish has been eating away at his fins and now it's got ich or fin rot or some other fungal infection. Sounds like you should chuck some Maracyn or some such in there. You can get fish drugs at most pet stores...look for symptons that match yours. Don't forget to take the carbon filter insert out while you're using them.

7 fish in a 30 gallon and it seems crowded?! And tetras? That's practically empty....

I have ummm

1 Striped Catfish (3")
7 Bloodfin Tetras (1.5" each)
1 Goldbar Platy (1.5")
1 Mickey Mouse Platy (1.5")
2 Chinese Algae Eaters (2" each)
4 Harlequin Raspborae (1" each)
3 Scissortail Raspborae (2" each)
2 Dwarf Gouramis (2" each)
1 Striped Headstander (1", but MIA...maybe the catfish ate him?)

And I think I should get more, but my good sense tells me that I'm getting on towards the capacity of my tank, esp as the fish get full-grown. I run a tight ship doing regular cleaning, water changes, filter changes, good power heads stirring the water surface, but even then there's limits :)

You may also want to get a small containment tank that you can suction cup to the inside of your tank to prevent the other fish from getting to the catfish.

wanna talk crowded? i have a 100 gallon tank with only one fish and it's too crowded. it's a koi and this sucker is over 2 feet long now. she has a hardtime turning around. the tank is long enough but not wide enough. i should put her in a pond. i think that's what i'll do or buy a larger tank.

btw, i know it's female because it's already laid hundreds of eggs. man those eggs are hard to clean out. they stick everywhere.

yes it is time for you to get a pond. Kois belong in a pond. :) And a 2 foot koi? Wow! How old is that thing?!

Maybe he was/is lonely. Get him a big brother, like an Oscar. My fish used to be lonely, then I got an Oscar, and he loved playing with them. He used to let them play in his mouth, I think they're still hiding there.

It's most likely a fungus. The "fungus" you describe is likely a secondary infection resulting from the fin damage (caused by another fish) and not necessarily the cause of the fin damage itself.

Unfortunately it's sounds like your catfish has a date with the grim reaper but you still may want to treat the whole tank with an anitbiotic or anit-fungal just in case. But you never know, I have a fish that got "popeye" from an injury and the entire eye popped out of his head. He's back to normal now, and healthy as ever, aside from having only one eye. ;)

How's the temp in that 10 gallon? With the onset of cooler weather, when the temps dip in smaller tanks, parasitic infections tend to flare up.

*EDIT* RE: medicine. The Mardel products a decent. MarOxy or Maracyn maybe in order in this situation but it might help to talk to a local pet shop to be sure.

it's either a fungus or ick. Clean your tank immediately. Treat with an anti-fungus medicine. Go to your pet store, describe the problem and they will give you the correct stuff. IF YOU DON'T CLEAN YOUR TANK IMMEDIATELY, AND TREAT THE PROBLEM, ALL OF YOUR FISH WILL BE SICK WITHIN DAYS. If you look carefully, I bet you'll notice that a white film is already noticeable on the fins and eyes of all the fish. The Pleco is probably the only one who would live if you choose not to treat the tank.
