Sorry to hear about this...it does sound like kidney problems....my 16 year old cat is going through almost the same thing and he has been diagnosed with renal failure (it's in the early stages)

At that age it's about his time though. It is NOT fun watching them go and if he needs to be put down then do it. It's gut wrenching in how much love they still show/give you in the end. Do it him and you as well.

Dad just got back. They put him down. The vet said it was most likely a disc problem in his back.

They might have been able to operate but it would have been expensive and at his age, probably not really worth it. I think he had some other problems other than his back though.

He had a good long life though.

Sorry to hear that man. But it sounds like it was the right thing to do rather than watch him suffer to his ultimate death bed.

And if you feel like cryin just let it out. I wept like a little baby when we put my dog of 15 years to sleep 3 years ago and I didn't care one bit.

It's as tough as losing a family member if you've raised him since he was a kitten.

Man, I feel your pain. We have a cat that's been around as long as I can remember (I'm 21). I think she is either 18 or 19 years old now, and we just know she's not going to last that much longer, but she's still in pretty good health, for the time being.

my cat passed away in a similar way... she had a disease (that only cats can get apparently) where the cavity around her lungs fills up with fluid. She had identical symptoms as what you're describing. We took her to the vet, and they said that they could continue to stick a needle in her chest to pull out the fluid, and she could live for a while longer, or we could put her to sleep.

I'm not sure why (was with my parents at the time) but they scheduled her to be put to sleep the next morning. She didn't make it through that afternoon. She seemed to die peacefully, lying on her favorite blanket. I just sat with her and petted her.

it's unfortunate indeed. We had to put down our dog of 13 years. it was painful to watch him deteriorate =(

15 years is a good time for a cat.

at least he was in a loveing family. to bad you were not near me. i found 6 kittens in a bush the other day. i was about to mow over it when i seen something moveing. i would guess they are about 4 weeks old.

now i gotta find something to do with them heh

A large number of cats prefer to die on their own, with no audience, they just hide somewhere... if your cat shows signs that he wants to go someplace and hide, don't follow him closely, leave him his dignity.

But, follow the cat nonetheless. You DO want to know where the cat is if it hides some place to die. Ours passed away a 2 weeks ago, we knew she was sick but she vanished before her vet appointment 14 hours after we noticed her vomiting. Unfortunately, she hid well - we didn't find her for several days. 🙁 Poor cat. Incidentally, we had already made up our minds to have the cat put down at the vets office; we knew it was inevitable (most likely feline leukemia which she had tested positive for the previous month at the vet.)

Hope you have at least taken him to the vet recently....cats do need more care as they age. 15 is a good stretch, but if the cat has 2-3 more decent years that's quite a bit more life to live.
