He's at least 15 years old and has been kind of stumbling around a lot lately. He's also lost a lot of weight. Today I come home and find out he can't walk and really can't sit up any more. he just lays on his side and when he tries to sit up, he just falls over. he can move all of his legs so i think maybe its his back.

other than not being able to sit up he seems ok. 🙁
 
Poor thing!

...pet him and take care of him... give him comfort in his last days... make him a nice, comfortable bed on the ground, give him some treats and water.
A large number of cats prefer to die on their own, with no audience, they just hide somewhere... if your cat shows signs that he wants to go someplace and hide, don't follow him closely, leave him his dignity.
 
if he's that bad off, maybe taking him to the vets to be put down would be a good idea. If he's suffering but still has 3 or 4 days, or more left in him, do you really want to let him suffer longer than he has to? It's a hard thing to do, my mom had to put down quite a few cats over the years. It's just hard to see them in a state where you know if it's not over for them, it's damn close.

about 10 years ago one of my moms cats started to show signs, the cat was around 15, didn't notice anything before this day. She took her to the vets and it was done for, started having a hard tiem breathing while at the vets and they couldn't do anything for her. Oddly enough this was a pretty mean cat, but that morning the cat was super nice to me, I gave her milk and water and she was actually affectionate towards me. She knew her time was near I think, was weird to have the cat be nice to me after 15 years of hissing though ahah
 
Go ahead and take him to the vet pontifex. We got your back, man

Take him to the vet and have him put down. I know that sounds awful but the alternative isn't pretty, not for you and especially not for him.
 
Hey bro i know how you feel it was just last month that I had to put my cat down with almost the same symptoms that you are describing, he wasn't eating or drinking much, he lost a ton of weight, he would just lay around, and he couldn't make his usual jumps to the counter. It was the most difficult thing I had to do but I know it was the right choice, here's a of him a few yrs ago. I know we've had our disagreements on these forums before, but I honestly hope that everything is okay with your cat and whatever happens to your cat, it doesn't suffer.

Nothing is harder than watching your innocent little helpless pet suffer in pain 🙁

I've been there before and after having a pet for 15 years since it was a puppy, and watching him on his last days, is one of the toughest things I've had to go through.

Could just be Thyroid which is common with older cats.

Simple oral medication cures it or if severe a common surgery.
 
It could be a multitude of things. But if his 9 lives are up, the doctor will give you the options best suited for him I am sure.
 
Given the age and weight loss you describe it may be kidney problems. If his breath smells particularly bad (not the normal catfood type bad) that would be another indicator of kidney problems as well.

he has been pissing on the floor in various places a lot lately too and i think maybe his vision is going.
 
Yeah when I took me cat to the vet they said it could've been one of these the kidneys, liver, thyroid, or cancer, and even if I went through with any treatment it wouldn't do much.

I had a cat that looked sort of like that, but more white on the body. Same tiger-striped tail. Had him for a while, but he must have picked up some kind of infection at some point. He died in my arms...he was purring right before, and then he just fell asleep and then stopped breathing. Sad.
