Hopefully I can get some help with this. My pointer moves without my moving the mouse and it will move around even when I am trying to click an icon or link.

This won't help if you're talking about a desktop (which you probably are). But if you're using a mouse with a laptop it's the computer re-calibrating the pointer stick to stay centered.

Obviously if no signals are coming from the mouse, it shouldn't move. Are you saying it moves even with your hands off of it? Holding it perfectly still why clicking is actually kind of hard.

Does this happen with a different mouse?

Do you use the generic Windows driver?

I believe Windows does have settings tucked away in the registry that control this sort of thing. (You may be able to ignore movement below a certain amount.)

What kind of mouse?
Which connector is it using to go to the computer?

I had a border install remote administrator on my box one time. When I got home and started using my computer the mouse would move around without me doing anything .. it wasn't fvcking funny. I was really fvcking pissed that he did that.

It happens after I stop moving the mouse and then the pointer will move vibrate (left to right) within half inch space on my desktop.

Small, erratic movements can be caused by dirt and stuff on any mouse. My Explorer jiggles around a bit every now and then. No big deal.

I've seen the opticals using USB do this alot. They don't do it when you put the PS/2 adapter back on them though.

btw - its a USB stability issue, not the mouse. Happens on even Intel designs so no need for any VIA bashing.

Hah .. good piece of prevention there :)

I also find that when I use my optical on a wooden surface it does that too .. it's best to have a surface that has an even, smooth texture.

I have 2 MS optical wheel mice (mouses?) on different computer systems. They are slightly different. One is about 9 months old and the other is 3 months. Neither one moves the pointer on its own. They are dead still. One is plugged into USB and the other into PS2. I do not use the drivers supplied with them, for one reason and another, but the MS drivers did not misbehave when installed. It the pointers moved erratically, I'd consider the mice unusable.

MS advises using their optical mice on surfaces with texture, so the optical mouse has something to pick up on. If the surface is too slick, evidently it is a problem.

On this computer, I have two mice plugged in. The optical mouse is sitting unused most of the time. If it caused any movement on the screen, it would be particularly obvious because I don't even have my hand on it.

I've seen in in IBM T20x-series laptops, 845-based Dells and IBMs, and in 3rd party assembled machines only when using the USB.

Its more common with the laptops when using the USB connector but is nonexistent when moving back to the PS/2 port.

I installed VNC on my parent's computer and did that to my dad once. He started flipping out and shaking the mouse going "what the hell is wrong with this thing". Before I did it I clued my mom in and she finally told him. It was hilarious :D
