I rather be out and catch some sun.

Why didn't you postpone it until wintertime? I was supposed to serve in May, but pushed it back to early February so that I don't get screwed out of any golf days.

I dont think I had the option of post poning. I had a set date to come in and everything.
I wouldn't mind doing it during the winter time, but might as well jsut get it out of the way

Dude, wish I could switch with you. I love jury duty. I've been a juror 3 times in the last 10 years. Great fun when you are a law student, especially if you get an interesting case.

Just say, "Duke Lacrosse Case", that ought to get you out of jury duty. The prosecution will boot you.

I personally don't understand the rational behind jury selection though, it's supposed to be a jury of peers, not a jury of people selected in your/other sides favor.

My friend was selected for a medical malpractive case. He is a doctor. He stated based on the preliminary facts that this was clearly a case of someone trying to get a payday and that he would be clearly biased against the defendant. It worked but the judge was so pissed at him that she sent him to another court room to sit for duty. One Alexander Hamilton later he was a free man...

It was 2 weeks of Jury selection in the case I was on. But they created groups that came in on certain days. You didnt have to stay the entire two weeks. Once the trial started it was almost every day for a month of being there.

?Well, I don?t know. I might be,? was the response.

?That?s true,? Ellis answered.

Nickerson ordered Ellis taken into custody. He was released later Monday morning.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA what a fucking moron...he claims to be a liar but then admits the truth at the end. Brilliant guy.:D

maybe he was lying about not wanting to serve?

OJ Simpson comes to mind, what if I get called and end up serving on a trial that takes 10 months. Unlikely but with my luck it would happen. Also I don't like the idea of having a humans life in my hand. If it came down to possibly putting another human on death row, even if I was 100% sure they did it, I wouldn't want to make that call...

I wouldn't mind sitting on a jury if I weren't too busy at work at the time (which I usually am). I've tried something like 30 cases but I've never sat on a jury. It's rare for a lawyer to make a jury but it can happen - actually my colleague just sat on a manslaughter jury a couple of months ago.

Isn't the best way to get out of the jury duty is to not answer the mail and not show up?

the story said that this would be a Grand Jury that the man was summoned for. Those juries meet every so often and have like a one year term. They are much more disruptive to a person's work/school schedule than a regular jury. Can you imagine taking off work throughout the year to sit on a jury for a few days every so often. I feel for what he went through because I think many Grand Jury are volunteer based because of the time commitment.

In my jury selection, there was a woman who made a list of everything horrible that has ever happened to her or her family/relatives. She had no qualms in revealing robberies, assaults, and a murder for everyone to hear. It took her 10 minutes to go through the list but she was dismissed after we came back from break.

During my jury selection for a child abuse case they read out the names of the arresting officers and asked if anyone thinks they might know any of those people.

Turns out my brother-in-law was the lead detective on the case. "Have a nice day Mr Patel"

Jury duty really isn't that bad. Bring a book and time will fly. If you have a legitimate reason why you can't become a juror, just tell them. The system is only as good as the people who serve. I don't plan on ever having to defend myself at court, but I sure would want a jury that wasn't anxious to convict me so they could go to the beach.

Moral of the story is not to exaggerate your lies, and to stick with them. Simply put subtle hints that you're homophobic and racist in there, and then when they question you simply stick to your story. Admitting you lied is just stupid.

Thank goodness my county has a notification system that you might be selected. You can check the site every morning to see if you really need to come in. You check once again in the afternoon or something too just in case. The point is you WILL know if you have to go in that morning. Thus the worst that can happen is you miss one morning to find out that you will be selected. You won't waste time finding out that you didnt have to come in at all.

I personally hate Jury Duty. I've only been once (last year). I wasn't called to serve, but I had to sit in a crowded room all day with soap operas showing on the TV.

I hate crowded rooms, and I'm a little bit of a germaphobe so it wasn't a fun day at all.

If you enjoy the freedoms guaranteed to you in this country, at least take part in the process that provides them.

Yep, how can they prove that you received the summons?

I was called up for jury duty several years ago. I was unemployed at the time, and was looking forward to serving jury duty. I was called for a trip and fall case involving the city and two other defendants.

It turns out one of the defendants is Consolidated Edison, which I have a definite bias against because of how they forced my mother to pay electricity charges that she was not responsible for. (The electric bill of her apartment's previous tenant)

During the jury selection process, one of the defense lawyers is asking if anyone has any reason to be biased against Consolidated Edison. I almost say nothing, but I decide to speak up and tell them my reason. I also add that will do my best to be fair despite my previous dealings with Consolidated Edison.

Dismissed!

I was a little disappointed that I would not get any more paid juror days. It was only thirty dollars a day, but it was better that zero dollars a day. It was definitely an interesting experience, and I would gladly do it again, unless it did put undue hardship on me.
