My personal irritation with FEAR 2 and Steam...

So I bought the Orange Box a long time ago because it was such a ridiculously great value, and had lots of MP replay value (can you say TF2).

I purchased Episode 2 because I'm a big fan of the HL story and it was only $9.99 when I bought it.

I purchased Left 4 Dead for $24.99 on black friday at Amazon.com, because it has lasting value due to a strong MP component.

I bought Stalker SOC because it was $4.99 awhile back, it has been patched quite a bit since its release, and it was cheap. Although I now feel I wasted $4.99 because it apparently still hasn't been patched enough, as I have experienced several random hard-lock type crashes with this game. Oh well, no major loss of funds here and not worth pursuing a refund...ok back on topic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which brings me to FEAR 2. I loved the original FEAR game, but I basically played through the SP campaign of FEAR when it first came out, and then sold it off within a month to recoup some of my expenses since I only wanted to play the SP campaign.

I'd love to do this with FEAR 2 (buy, play SP, sell quickly to recoup cash), but I can't due to it only being released on Steam. So how to handle this?

A) Create a new Steam account, only register FEAR 2 to it, and try to sell it on eBay later? Lots of hassles and questions about the legality of the resell, so no thanks here.

B) Just go get it on the PS3 ($60), buy a FragFX controller for ($60-$80), and hope I can get used to switching over from a KB/Mouse configuration (I'm not likely to like the switch, and it's an expensive proposition for a single game don't you think)?

C) Arrrr matey!!! I like to support developers like Monolith and Valve who consistently make great games and I really don't want to screw them over. Also, I don't want to risk getting locked out of all my legitimately purchased Steam games.

D) Just don't buy or play the game and hope Monolith doesn't go out of business. Sucks for me if they do (I purchased, played, and loved Shogo, FEAR, etc.).

Am I alone here, or is anyone else feeling a bit screwed by Monolith and really the PC gaming industry in general? Even Crysis Wars, Spore, et. al. with Securom can at least be resold easily, provided the activations aren't all used up. However, I don't like how invasive Securom is on my PC either, and Steam at least has the advantage of me not having to keep discs around to play my bought and paid for games, I can reinstall my games as many times as I please, and I can access my games from any computer attached to the Internet via Broadband for the most part.

If console companies would just put proper KB/Mouse support into their games, I think I'd just deal with 1080p or 720p resolution on my 32in LCD (unfortunately without some of the eye candy available to me on my PC), and go console only from here on out. As I see it, basically I get screwed on expensive AAA SP titles due to the lack of resellability, or I risk my PC's stability and security if I go ahead and just deal with the likes of Securom.

Man I wish there was no DRM in FEAR 2, because then I could feel good about buying it. As it stands now, I think I'll stick with option "D" for now and pick it up from the bargain bin a year or so from now (I'm really not cheap, but I do work very hard for my money and I try and stretch my gaming dollars as far as they will go). Due to the Steam only route Monolith has taken with FEAR 2, I feel $49.99 is far to much to pay for a gimped product.

Edit: Option "A" doesn't seem to be an option.

Edit:
Here it is at gamestop.

Retail boxed copies must be registered through Steam, and thus are locked to the account you register it to. This is how my boxed copy of Left 4 Dead worked too, although this was expected when I bought it since it is a Valve product. Without some research into the copy protection, I'd have never known it was a Steam-only product by the packaging.

Oh I see.

Well, that sucks for me at least. Like you, being able to resell games is an important factor for me. Granted, I've bought plenty of games off Steam that I knew I couldn't sell.

But I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy L4D and hoped I could resell the retail (boxed) copies.

I too hate Steam being tied Fear 2. At least with Securom/Starforce you don't run the risk of multiple games being banned if you try to crack it, unlike Steam games tied to your account. I didn't even know Fear 2 had a Steam requirement until I read about it a day before I picked it up.

Even worse, when it was installing, the Steam installer wouldn't let the drive rev up to full bore so disc 1 took ages to copy its data across. With a 12 GB game, that really added to the install time, and the whole thing took about 25 minutes when it should?ve taken about 10.

Thankfully the second disc revved up properly, so it copied the data about twice as fast as the first one.

Option C. yeah - it sucks, but you shouldn't be locked into the retail boxed version of the game.

Console versions don't require a STEAM account - why should this one? I only see this as a trend... so you can either bend over and take it up the arse or join ye mateys on the high seas...

BTW - it probably wasn't Monolith's decision to implement this type of "securom" - I'd have to say it was Warner Bro's decision...

Actually, knowing that Warner Bros owns Monolith (I had forgotten that) makes it a little easier to not purchase FEAR 2 immediately.

I'm so glad the music industry is technologically clueless. If they'd been as technologically knowledgeable as the software industry we'd now be in the situation where whenever you wanted to play a music track you'd have to connect your stereo/mobile-phone-mp3-player to the internet and get 'permission'. And probably get charged per play. And you'd have to agree to a 1000 line EULA everytime you bought an album.

FEAR2 can join the list of games I'm not buying.

What a crock of crap. I only buy boxed games (unless they're HELLA cheap on Steam) because I want to resell them afterwards to recoup some cost and use it towards a new game. What an annoying way to "protect" your IP profits.

I bought my copy from D2D and it is NOT run through steam. After installing the game, I click the desktop icon and off we go..as per usual. By the way..the install time was long anyhoo..lots of unpacking going on in the background..around 15 mins with my sys. Great game.

PS- I am a FPS type of guy..is L4D worth the $25 ? I played the demo and it wasn't bad..just wondering if the rest of the game was any good.

Just because it's against the Steam TOS doesn't make it illegal. Breaking a TOS and breaking a federal/state law are two very different things. As you said though, it would still probably be a hassle. This is an example of when Steam's "good" DRM is actually pretty shitty.

Initially yes. There are ways to play it in offline mode after that. There are work arounds. Google it.

ZzZGuy asked..So I have to go online and activate FEAR 2 to play it in SP mode?

Answer..Not necessarily..if you have an issue with this..see my post above..I elected to buy from Direct To Drive this time because I wanted more control of how I play my game. Steam is a vendor that I buy my games from as well, but not this time. We have choices, make the one that suits you..and get into the game.

So the D2D version of the game doesn't have the Steam requirement? Many of the D2D games do, which is why I'm surprised if it doesn't.

How about you BUY it, and download it, then remove the illegal version, and resell ^^

Little bit offtopic, this kind of practice is becoming standard. Dawn Of War II will feature the same kind of activation on Steam, and thus can't be resold.

Nobody will buy boxed Steam games because there's absolutely no guarantee they haven't been activated already.

Well it's settled then, no getting FEAR 2 until this is removed. With a long stretch of no internet connection coming up, this game is a shiny coaster if I format my laptop (and there are many reasons why I would in 10 months).

Hmm, I shall look into that.

@MarcVenice
So killing the second hand PC market was a good thing? I wouldn't be into PC games as much if I couldn't go and buy second hand copies when I was a kid, I didn't have the money and didn't know about pirated games.

This move to steam just means it'll be even longer before I buy any of these. If it's a grade a game, it will have to be on a decent sale; other titles will have to be on a clearance type sale. Really about time for these "defenders of pc gaming" schmucks to shut the hell up when all they're letting you do is rent a game you paid for.
