What problems does running without the battery cause?

That doesn't make sense.
This may be complete bunk, but I have read that the laptop will draw AC power through the battery when plugged in and this helps regulate voltages if you're getting spikes from the wall, or if you suddenly experience brownout conditions (which can damage your hardware). Obviously if you lose power entirely, your laptop won't work at all without the battery present. And as a simple matter of convenience, it's also preferable to be able to unplug from the wall and be instantly mobile than have to dig for a battery you've stored and wait for it to recharge.
Besides, how long do you think you will prolong your battery by not using it? Lithium Ion batteries should be stored at about 40% and you have to
maintain that charge level to avoid reducing the battery life. So you still have to put the battery in every so often to check its charge level and get it back up to 40%. Some people go so far as to store their batteries in their freezer to reduce the rate of gradual depletion. Is this effort really worthwhile? Personally, I'd rather spring for a new battery every few years.
My point was: if your battery
already doesn't hold a charge, why would you take steps to prolong its life? Sounds like the damage has been done. Just leave the battery in to rule out its absence as even a possible contributor to your problem. And if by some chance the laptop or battery are still under warranty and it can be shown that the battery is faulty, you may be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
