My PC won't play DVDs

My PC used to be able to play DVDs, but now it won't. Everytime I try to play one on my computer, my computer makes a weird, short and repetitve sound, my mouse becomes a sand timer icon on for a long time, and I'll often get a "not responding" message.

I've also tried downloading cyberlink DVD to see if my computer would play DVDs with that, but no luck.

What could be the problem?

Edit: Also, after I put in the DVD for like 5-10 minutes, I'll get a pop up that asks me what I want to do with the blank CD in the drive that I put my DVD in.

Always put in your pc specs when you're reporting problems, like motherboard, OS version, drive brand/model, etc. Then we'll have a better idea.

Have you tried updating your firmware?
My Plextor went wacky on me once, and that worked.
