Try a different driver for your ATI 9700 card - the blue screen seems to indicate an ATI problem. Sometimes the newest drivers have a bug or two with certain systems. Try the next to newest release and see how it goes.

SP2 causes problems with some software, but I doubt it would cause a total crash.

You can do what i did the first 3 times i tried SP2
Cuss for a few hours then Uninstall it
takes awhile but it fixed the problems my last comp had with SP2

I had major problems with gaming after SP2 also
firewall, anti-virus and security center issuses mostly

good luck

also you might try to do a restore point ,SP2 sets one before it installs

hope this helps

do I what I do... find the security center process in the process list and DISABLE it. As long as you have a firewall, and anti-virus and update XP, it's not needed.

Come on guys, enough of the dopey SP2 bashing.

Chances are SP2 just overwrote the OpenGL files. All he should have to do is reinstall his video drivers.

Whenver I run the System File Checker (sfc) on my system, it always overwrites my Nvidia opengl files. The only thing I need to do is reinstall my Nvidia drivers, and I'm good to go.

Reinstall the ATI drivers.

Ok, this will most likely fix the problem.

Uninstall sp2.
Do Strict ADAWARE and SPYBOT and TROJANHUNTER scans on your system in safe mode.
Uninstall your antivirus.
Uninstall your firewall.
Install SP2.
Check the stability of your system.
if still a little dodgy, install your chipset drivers again.
If still a little pokey, install your vga drivers again.
Install your firewall [after disabling xp firewall, and ensuring you aren't connected]
install your av software.

Thanks guys for all your replies.

Tha problem IS in fact SP2. I uninstall Sp2 and put SP1 back in. Plyed all those games for like an hour with no problem. BTW before i uninstalled SP2 , i tried 3 different ATI driver and disabled security software and services and also used ATI driver remover and install new driver again and even tried omega driver and NON worked. F*** SP2 man:| anyway i am going to buy a different Video card like FX 5500 and see if it works with SP2 without any problem. I will let you guys know.

Bear in mind, that most sp2 is a bit dicey if certain Malware or Firewalls are installed on the computer.

That is why it is best to do a proper check for nasties, then uninstall firewalls/AV software before installing sp2.

I know, that's what i did in first place, i have 2 adawre and one spysweeper + FW and AV.

it's SP2 for sure. either ATI driver is causing the problem or 9700 pro. I have to put different card and see.

Thanks anyway

Well, again, not to be picky, but everything I've read researching this is not that it's SP2 related, necessarily, but that it's DirectX 9.x related. Now, it's true that DirectX 9.c is bundled with SP2, but it's also available for anyone to try, not just SP2 downloaders.

Here's a blurb from a guy who found hiw own fix to a vexing ati2dvag XP issue.

A FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME AND A BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE!! READ ON!

Here we go folks, I've been having this problem for almost a year now with my computer (infinite loop and ati2dvag.dll reboot errors), and tried almost everything my mind could possible think of doing. I've tried every solution on this board, and every other board I could find relating to this file and to the infinite loop, with absolutely no success. I tried every driver package available, bios updates, agp chipset updates, every combination of every setting. I've tried reducing power usage in my computer, I've placed more power in my computer... I've added more fans and created an optimal cooling system in my computer. I made sure there were absolutely no IRQ conflicts, and nothing was using the same IRQ as my video card. I've tried with one stick of ram, with one in 1 and 3. I've tried disabling onboard sound, and putting in a soundblaster card. Nothing... I mean nothing, worked at all.

Until now! I found a solution, that has worked for me and a bunch of other people who have tested it for me.
So give it a try, perhaps it will work for you too. My computer has been working 100% since I made this change. There is a chance it could reduce the effeciency of your texture drawing with your video card... but I've tested it with :

Unreal Tournament 2004
Rise Of Nations
Neverwinter Nights
Doom 3
Max Payne 2
Transport Giant
and a bunch of older games....

Anyhow, no more wait, give this a shot :

Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)

Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.

it's cause sp2 doesn't work on some ppls systems. I installed it, won't even boot up, it blue screens and crashes out constantly on bootup. I had a fairly normal system. Now it won't even let me install sp2, like I was trying to do one night when I was drunk. Something about non-standard bootloader. I don't like it anyway.

Look, Microsoft can defend themselves. They don't need me to. But saying "SP2" is the problem doesn't take into account all the drivers for the hardware you are using.

Is Microsoft supposed to wait until EVERY hardware manufacturer certifies that they have upgraded drivers for the new Service Pack while leaving security holes open? Come on, man, there are hundreds of thousands of hardware devices and software that use Windows.

These companies have to step up and get their act together. Microsoft puts out the word to these developers and the service packs are in beta for quite a period of time.

If you want to blame MS, then I would just ask why you wanted to upgrade to SP2 to begin with? I would assume for the security benefits. Well, closing holes can affect software and hardware. The companies involved have to fix their software.

Hold on, don't just blame the manufacturers of the hw.

IT IS ALSO DOWN TO MS, as they will demand royalties from any and every hw manufacturer that wants to be certificated.
This isn't peanuts - this is where a lot of their money come from, not just from consumers.
It is also down to MS as they release buggy software, as Slikkster says. They release mostly unfinished or unsafe software, in the safe knowledge that everyone will jump on the bandwagon.
You can see this by the recent threads of ppl with 300mhz cpu's wanting to upgrade to XP!!!

Well, hardware OEM's don't have to certify with Microsoft. But they DO have to make sure their drivers will work. That's their responsibility. I would bet that the overwhelming majority of issues with MS operating systems comes from third-party drivers and applications. There's just far too many combinations of possibile issues with software and hardware with MS. Frankly, I'm amazed that things work as often as they do.

Yeah, i know how you feel Slikkster.

Even with the same HW, The same SW, but just a couple of drivers difference, or the odd hotfix different CAN make a world of difference.

We are treading on fine lines when working with some systems..............

Slikkster,
The way I look at it, is that SP2 should be considered a part of XP, rather than a service pack.
If that is the case, would you recommend reloading the chipset drivers after an upgrade?

I am wondering, cos, I would normally do that if the system was a relatively new one, as a matter of course.
But on an older established system, if SP2 is installed successfully, I breathe a huge sigh of relief and don't want to fix something that ain't broke!! ;-)
Thanks - and a good fix

I agree.... SP2 has to be the worst SP released by Microsoft (and being from way back in the NT days... that says alot)

Here is a list of what happened when I tried to run SP2

1. PC would randomly reboot. (was thinking of calling in an excorcist before I finally went back to SP1)

2. MS Office had to be reinstalled at least once a week because programs refused to open

3. Constant memory errors

4. My cat got pregnant.

5. The water in my toilet started swirling the opposite direction when I flushed...

6. My talking bird would only say one word and I dont know what REDRUM means...

7. I now have Torrets syndrome (^*&$%$#%^%$!!!)

8. I got fat.

9. My kids hate me.

and last but not least...

10. My Ex wife actually had something nice to say to me... (scared the hell out of me... I had to spend the next 3 days in the psych ward because I thought I was having "Visions")

Overall SP2 was NOT a good experience..... I think I will wait for SP3 before I upgrade again.
