My parents need to learn to let go

So I am suppose to go up to ucsb for halloween. Took off from work and payed for my costume and stuff. One of my friends that was suppose to be going along just bailed on me because he is tight on money all of the sudden. I told my parents I would be driving alone and they sh!t a brick. "I dont want you going that far, your car could break down in the middle of LA" (btw the drive is only 2 1/2 hours at the most). "What if you are broken down on the side of the road and gangsters are around?!" I am almost 19 years old and they are pulling the same sh!t they pulled when I was 16. What kills me the most is that the car I drive is a 1997 oldsmobile cutlass which is in good shape and could easily make the trip. They are just using it as an excuse to keep me home. I wish I could get out and live on my own, but they pay all the bills and college, so I still have to listen to them. Me :|

overprotective parent..... watch they move in next to your house when you get married, miraculously obtain a key to your place and then literally live in your house with you and your wife 😀

Sucks, but that's the way it is. You can't have personal independence with financial dependence.

tell them you are an adult and you can handle it.

of course if something does happan do NOT CALL HOME! heh

There's not that much difference between 16 and 18.

I gave them the "I am not a kid anymore..." speech, but it didn't get me anywhere. :|

Yeah, you just gotta stomach it for as long you need to depend on them. So, milk em for their worth while you can, and then celebrate your freedom when you get out.

if you don't like it move out. they are paying you bills live with it. I hate hearing spoiled little 18-21 year olds still living at home complaining about thier parents not giving them any freedom. If you are still living at home after HS you still aren't responsible enough to make your own descions.

I can make my own descisions, but I don't want to take the route where I am struggling trying to pay bills while going to college.

then live with what your parents say. You really haven't learned about life until you have to go it with out a saftey net.

I moved cross country on my own right after HS and haven't looked back. my parents would of let me live at home while I went to school but I wanted to make my own life for my self and I did.

Yeah, 19 is a bit young for that long of a drive through LA. Sorry...agreeing with parents on that one. Their house, their rules.

If you make it up to SB/IV, good luck with parking! They're closing off streets and are going to tow cars without permits. More Info.

you can always shoot your parents like that girl did a couple of weeks ago when her mom grounded her. dude, they pay your bills and you live under their roof. that means that they OWN you. they dont have to be fair. you dont like it, then go out on your own. dumbass...

Eh, I'm 19 (20 in three weeks), and I drive all over the state all the time. However, everyone else is right in saying that they can basically control you since you need their money. Move out if you don't like it, that's what most people do. 😛
