My parents are perfectionist bastards

I had an asian GF once. Her dad kept calling me at all hours and giving me hell because I was very very satisfied with my 3.01. He was morbidly curious. Eventually he got too overbearing... calling the day my grades came out to ask about them. Eventually I had to welcome him into my heat with a restraining order.

Geez there is so much flaimbait in this thread I'm scared to make a meaningul reply. As for the asian thing, my parents are from Seribia and Korean. Oddly enough, it's not my mom (the asian one) who is giving me the most crap over this. Over it now though.

i'm really suprised you do not hear about more asian children murdering their parents. I'm certainly glad I am a white boy.

Ever stop to think that maybe Asians are the most successful minority in America BECAUSE Asian parents are this way???

Ever stop to think that maybe Asian students have suicide rates off the Richter scale BECAUSE Asian parents are this way???

Have any stats to back this up?

I remember seeing a documentary on it a few years ago - talking about the academic pressures that Asians usually experience from their parents, and how a lot of Asians commit suicide because they cannot live up to their parents expectations - plus, they are more likely not to seek help in times of need because doing to can hurt their pride, seeking help is looked down upon in many asian cultures, etc.

The only links I could come up with:

http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/depression/minorities_11.asp

http://www.news.cornell.edu/Chronicle/03/1.23.03/Asian_issues.html

I see nothing that states the suicide rate of Asian students in the US is dramatically higher than any other race. But it is painfully obvious they are far more successful than any other minority.

My opinion hasn't changed.

You would think that if Asian "suicide rates off the Richter scale" then the Asian population here would be declining, instead of being the fastest growing minority in the US (go look in the census bureau)

Edit --
My bad, it's the Wallstreet Journal. The article about all the Chinatowns popping all over the place.

im asian. after high school i really didnt try hard. got a 2.56 gpa or something. my parents were quite ashamed.

then again , it really doesnt matter which is why i decided to live life and chill. i think i'm on my way to being prety damn successful. asian parents are on crack. they need someone to wake them up and let them know that in america, there are a lot of things far more important than gpa. like personality and leadership. doesnt show up on that transcript but its probably 10 times more important.

You shouldn't try to do everything best. Even if in an end, you might end doing things you neglected (more or less) when it was the time to learn them.
But they should be proud of your accomplishments.

Calin

P.S. I remember of something my mother said: "You should kiss your babies only in their sleep". I am sure they are proud of what you did, but consider yourself capable of more.
