A dual-action or random orbit buffer should be pretty idiot-proof. I've never seen one that turns very fast, especially under load. I'm not sure how fast an electric DA you can get. Some air ones can spin pretty fast, I guess.

High-speed polishing is where you burn through paint. These devices do not have elliptical orbits and can spin very quickly.

I've burned through paint with a Porter Cable 7424. Given I was trying to do so to test what the limits were, it was an old hood.

No, I am serious. Personally, I have used HF rotary on my decade old vehicles without causing problems (make the Tim The Toolman noises here!) but after doing more research on the Meguair DA Power gizmo, it seems to be a good contraption and people who have used it have rated it highly. Honestly, without Meguairs name on it, I would have not have touched it with a ten foot pole but those guys do know what they are doing and I would have no hesitation to use it on my brand new Acura (which the HF rotary will never touch 🙂

OK, I looked at the full sized photo and those water spots look like they could be corrected if you are willing to put the effort. Get Meguairs Ultimate Compound from local Walmart($8), foam applicator pad($2) and few microfiber towels ($2). Follow the direction on the bottle and give some workout. If you see it making a difference (and it should) just go and buy the gizmo to attach to the drill and do the rest of the car.

I have had these spots on my Camry as it is parked outside and sprinkler leaves those nasty marks. Once in a while I use the UC on my buffer to take them out.

thanks for the suggestions. i think we'll have decent weather this weekend.

Come to think of it. I had a Silver 2004 Mazda3 and it was shit for paint quality. I had swirls like that but not as noticeable due to the colour I think.

Not to piss on your thread but Mazda's paint quality on the 3s is really a sore point with me. After the first year I knew multiple people complaining of fading and chipping and Mazda just ignored them. Until they had a secret recall due to all the cars rusting to hell and back. I got lucky and ended up with mostly swirls and some fading but very little rusting.

What year is yours?

it's a 2008.5. the hood is pretty chipped up.
