Hi all I am having an odd and annoying problem..

I have an Asus P5LD2 w/ a P-D830 processor, and with the Intel stock sink/fan and a AC Freezer7 with both cores maxed out, I end up going ABOVE 85c and it starts throttling.. A buddy has the same exact setup as I and doesn't have these problems.

I am stumped, been working on my computer for hours on end, and to no avail.

Currently I have the Freezer7 on, with correctly applied AS5.. It STILL jumps OVER 85c on full load.. I don't know WTF is going on here :(

I hope I can field some answers here, or did I just drop a bunch of money down the drain.. *sigh*

Thank you all!!

You probably need better case airflow.

On top of that, you may also need a better heatsink.

The pentium 800 series is the hottest processor line on the market today.

Dont think the freezer 7 was made for the pentium D's. From what iv seen, the freezer 64's (s939/754) work well, and the freezer 4's (socket 478) work well, but the freezer 7's cant seem to handle the heat of the pentium D's. Which is understandable since the fans on them are low rpm and low cfm. If i where you id put that stock cooler back on whilst you are looking for another HSF. Let intel be liable if and when your chip burns out ! Hopefully you find an adequate replacement before that happens

Its pure negligence from intel to provide a stock cooler that doesnt even cool the chip its bundled with properly. No wonder they're keen on BTX.

Upgrade to an X2...

No, really, You need a lot better cooling. The XP90c or the SI 120 are the way to go. This is the hottest processor you can buy, which is why most people don;t bother with it, especially since the X2 is much cooler, and faster, and less money.

What is the ambient temperatuire of the room that your system is in ?? Did your stock HSF have a pad applied ?? Sometimes its hard to remove all the PCTC, it gets in the pores of the heat spreader and prevents AS5 from doing a good job.

I'm running an Intel Pentium D 830 in an Antec P180 (4x 120mm case fans) with the Scythe Katana CPU cooler (300g) and applied AS5, at idle it is about 37 degrees Celsius.

I was previously running in a Lian Li PC61 (4 x 80mm case fans) with stock cooler, at idle it was about 50 degrees with +/- 3 degrees Celsius.

I wished I had gone with the X2 route.

What case do you have? What are your idle temps?

The first time I realized high temps with the stock cooler, I dismounted the stock cooler and remounted it. My guess is that the first time, I didn't install it properly.

Just my two cents.

Try the thermaltake Jungle 512. It seems to work pretty well with prescotts, better than my XP-120 did. It was hard enough to cool a single 5xx series core, so 2 of those cores in one package is gonna be worse..

It is amazing that this has been going one for 2 months now and not one P-D or any dual core Itel chip has ran the test...3 major sites too...

They likely crash when doing so ;)
Hence why no one posts results.

Nah, i think it's cause no one in the know actually buys the P-Ds

I've seen so many recommendations here.. Which one should I choose?

Can someone URL me to some reviews of sink/fans considering the P-D830?

Also, which ones will fit on a Asus P5LD2? I've emailed a few manufacturers but nothing back yet.

Thanks everyone!

Thermaltake Big Typhoon is currently the best air cooler out there.

Do you have firsthand experience with the Big Typhoon? If you look at my thread in Cases and Cooling, I'm having problems with mine not doing any better than a Zalman 7000A AlCu.

Hey Duvie, I'm actually going to do that test! I honestly don't care about the results (I know they won't be anywhere near an X2), but it would be interesting to see. I just got my setup in a couple of days ago, and now I'm trying to finalize what ram I should use (I'm going to start a new thread about my setup once everything is settled in). Theoretically, the test shouldn't be any different than single core versions of a 2.8ghz P-E (no HT) and a 3200+ S939. BTW I know some of you guys used FOTR or ROTK, but are those EE editions?

It seems a lot more efficient than my 7000A

Ironically enough, yes i do.
And i also have a Zalman 7000, the same one you do.

Now keep in mind my temp sensor is borked on my mobo, or somewhat anyway.

Temps with Venice 3200+ & Zalman = 65C under load
Temps with X2 3800+ & TT Big Typhoon = 55C under load

I am extremely impressed, especially since the X2 would runner hotter than the Venice normally.
