My Overclock Safe? E6600 @ 2.7 gHZ

i say your being very nice to your processor, most of the ppl in the forum fully abuse these chips with voltage and heat ... actually not heat coz we try to keep it under thermal spec 😀 ... 2.7ghz 1.3Vcore under 60C stable imho you got zero to worry about:thumbsup:

It was done through the asus overclocking tool, my first overclock was my old 5600 FX 256MB card years ago. I just wanted to make sure my machine was ok, I know what you mean, I may bump it up to 2.8 and run some programs to see if it?s within my reach:clock:
 
At 2.7 ghz, you could probably manual set the vcore in your bios to lower the temps.
i got the e6600 stable @ 1.2750 V with 28 / 46 temps

Your voltage is fine as of now, but if it's possible to lower it, why not? Lower voltages = lower temps and both = longer CPU lifespan.

Are you using the stock cooler?

Yeah Im pretty sure, my case is well ventilated, How would I go about lowering it? small steps in th ebios but how much? can I reverse it if it goes wrong?
 
ZOMG DON'T LISTEN TO THEM YOUR COMPUTER IS GOING TO EXPLODE. ANYTHING OVER -15C CAUSES THE UNIVERSE TO EXPLODE.

But, seriously, you can probably go to 3.0 ghz on default volts. Anything <65 on E6600 is ok.

what vcore would be right for 2.8Ghz? Im at 1.33v @ 2.7 with temps 51 at full load.
 
if you going to overclock this E6600.. you DEFINITELY don't want it at 2.7ghz so low, if you don't need that fast of cpu, at first hand you should get low end C2D chip like E4300.

with E6600, dont waste its potential, go for 3.4-3.6ghz. voltage range should be 1.35-1.45. temperature less than 65C is good.

Usually I buy systems and never ever upgrade or maintain them, but I promised myself id upgrade my system every couple of months or gain some performance in some way. Now days I have alot more spare money so I thought an overclcok of the CPU to around 2.8 Ghz would do me until I got a quad core, my GTS is fine for a year but RAM upgrade ( Just need to find some Gskil) to 4GB( Yes I know windows will only see 3? but If I want to keep my dual channel I'l have to stick 4GB in - well from my undertstanding, been out the loop for a few years)

One question, with 1.3Vcore and temps around 51 full load, how is my CPU life cycle shaping up?

Should 2.8Ghz on 1.3Vcore be fine? Has anyone managed to obtain 2.8Ghz with a lower Vcore?

why not push it to 3.0GHz (333*9). That's the same as the E6850.

And you are no where near a threshold of which you should worry about. You are safe til about 1.4v and 60C. I had my E6400 @ 1.41v @ 3.49GHz, @ 56C load.
But seriously, you should go at least 3.0GHz, maybe 3.3 (366.67*9). I have my Q6600 @ 3.15GHz for gawd's sake.

I want 2.8 Ghz, but what Vcore is acceptabe and what temps are ? 1.3Vcore, 51 full load temps?


I may upgrade the fan too.
 
For 2.8, you should be able to hit it with 1.3-1.35v no problem, and any temps up to 60C w/ Orthos is safe. Core2's are touch$@%&s and can take a lot. I pushed my E6400 to 3.733GHz @ 1.5v with 62C temps on Ortho and never had any adverse affects.

I still say 3.0GHz. You can hit that with 1.33-1.35v at safe temperatures. It's just 333*9, and then your processor would be a E6850. You would be perfectly safe at 3GHz.
 
2.7 was the best I could hit with no vcore increase, I had to go 1.4 to get stability at 3 GHz. My CPU will however undervolt to 1.225 at stock and be completely stable, and never got above 50 or so degrees.
 
E6600 @2.925GHz here with 1.3V (showing as 1.28V in Everest/CPU-Z).

Why 2.925?

because it gives me a nice 325MHz FSB, for a Memory Divider of 16/13 for the 400MHz Memory Bus => 800MHz Memory Speed.

But 650i chipset lets me run it unlinked, so I can pick and choose the memory frequency/divider. Intel 965 Express chipset does not have a great variety of Memory Dividers.

Temps: Idle CPU 38C, Core 1/2 ~43C, Load CPU 47C, Core 1/2 ~58C.

Intel Stock HSF, but with Side Panel fan blowing on the processor.
 
Today Iv gone from 2.7 to 2.8 Ghz, my temps seem to be about the same and the asus program I used hasnt up'd the voltage, still at 1.33V core. I played battlefield 2 for an hour when I check it was coming down from 48C, this is with the stock cooler.
 
As said, see if you can lower the voltage to the CPU. For example, my E6600 seems to need the following voltages for these different frequencies:

3.0GHz: 1.17V
3.2GHz: 1.20V
3.3GHz: 1.24V
3.4GHz: 1.28V

It's never a good idea to use more voltage than needed. 1.3V as you feed your chip is not going to harm it, though. It's specified for up to 1.35V.

Here's a noob question

How do I alter the Vcore sucessfully in the bios and how do I test it'l hold?
 
clarkey01 I notice you have the same board as I do. When increasing FSB this board doesn't bother to change memory timings, instead basing them off your ratio. In that case it may set too tight timings even with your DDR2-800 memory. What I would do is find out the timings on them at DDR2-667 and manually set those, then put the FSB to 333.
