My oven continually heats up regardless of the set temperature.

Does this sound like a problem with the thermostat? I'm going to start looking for a part, and wanted to get some feedback on what you guys thought before ordering.

Souonds like a thermostat to me.

As always, we need brand and model...oh yeah, and fuel source.

It's an electric Hot Point stove, but I was going to do the part searching myself. :) Just wanted to be a little more sure in ordering the right part before I did.

That's odd, I would have thought that they would engineer that part so that if it failed, the opposite happened: no heat, rather than runaway heating. Or maybe it does fail off 99% of the time, and you just happen to be that extra special 1%.

I guess. We broke a cheap glass baking pan and a nice piece of corningware before we realized what was happening. It was getting so hot, our bakeware was breaking (not to mention stuff was burning).

No idea. It was after that incident that I knew something was wrong, so I bought a thermometer and found that even though I had it set to 200 degrees F, the oven kept warming up to almost 500F before I turned it off 10-15 minutes later.

I had that problem w/ my old stove- it would just keep getting hotter- actually started a small fire when I was cooking a pizza that had it's own cooking tray.
Eventually it stopped working at all, and I just went ahead and replaced it rather than trying to repair it.

very nice.

we had an oven similar to that one at my old home when I was a wee one. It had heating issues too, but not like the OP or like in this video.

There was a clock/timer attached to the range top as a separate unit. I was unscrewing the cover for the timer one day when a gigantic spark went off, just like the video. Didn't knock me back, but melted straight through the screwdriver (in less than a second)...thank God for the plastic handle ;)

and yeah, I believe I had placed my other hand on the surface of the appliance while I was unscrewing the timer.

On the back of the dial should be two screws and some temp settings. Make sure that didn't come loose and the oven is going to 450 at a low setting.

My advice is not to mess with it. Go to a Sears scratch & dent Clearance Center and deal.

There is a vent on the back right burner.

I had this problem with my stove, if you have something on the back right burner, take it off and try again. Something as simple as a Pan was sitting on the burner while the oven was on 350 degrees, the vent was blocked and wouldn't allow the oven to cool down when it needed to so the temp got to like 500 degrees inside.

That's what solved it for me at least, your oven is probably f'd if that is not your issue.
