To start, i have a very broad taste of music. Some i like becasue of the beat, some becasue of the lyrics, and some just because i can not find a reason to dislike them.

Anyway, to the meat of the thread.
I think that the best music of all time can not be labeled to a certain type, but to an emotional level. Most casual music listeners do not care enough to learn the history of the great artists. I think it is very important to learn the artists background before really enjoying them. Music is something that comes from the soul, and is a direct representation to what the artist is feeling. In my opinion the greatest bands of all time have been thoes who have poured their souls out on their records.

To really appreicate a certain artist is to understand where they are comming from with the power of their lyrics. If a person can relate to lyrics of a song through their own life experiences then they quickly become an avid listener to a that artist. Music is a source of insparation for all of us. The same song can make someone cry, another person laugh, and make another person feel in love.

For me lyrics make a song.

Understanding the message an artist is trying to convey is the most important part of music.

Lyrics makes a song, but doesnt make the music.
music is just music, with no lyrics.
In my opinion, music is alot stronger than words, pure music has no language boundaries like a song. Try to listen to some of the classical pieces, those are real music, which is a form of art that expresses one's emotion purely based on music notes instead of words.

After i posted this thread, i thought about exactally what you are saying. I think you are exactally right about the language barrier. But in the modern history of music (60's and above) lyrics are very important...

Dont get me wrong, i like to drunk air guitar my arse off just becasue the music moves me. But in the greatest of the great in the past 40+ years, lyrics have defined them.

The exception being a live concert. In a concert it is all about stage presence, raw musical talent, and the enegry that it brings to the crowd.

I agree, yet disagree. A lot of people get WAY too involved trying to "know" the band/singer, and then have these lame expectations and whatnot. I prefer to listen to the music, and if an artist has songs that are good and songs that totally suck, that's fine with me, and I'll continue to listen to the songs I like without crying about the artist. Once they start to suck they're dead.

Well, people who i think are great artists all died rather young, so they did not get a chance to fade away.

Nowell, Hoon, Cobain...etc

I do agree with you in a way. I, however, almost need a revolution in music. I am almost getting tired of the music I listen to now. (ie punk and most forms of rock)

I can't agree/associate with MetallicA's lyrics, but the sound sure as hell charges me up before games. Kill 'em all...

...and let the paramedics sort 'em out.
