Bought a 40GB IBM Deskstar in August 2001
It's been under pretty heavy usage right up until the other day when it started making high pitch noise followed by a click over and over.
Initially I thought it was about time really and so far I've been having trouble moving on (more on this here)
But, to help solve my problem, I'm using my REALLY old 3gig Fujitsu drive, which has taken the same intense usage for a good 4 years prior to my Deskstar upgrade. At which time it was passed on to my younger brother and used for another couple of years by him.
So why does the old drive still work when the newer Deskstar (which was a pretty good model when I bought it) has snuffed it?
Should I be content with the 6 years of good service? Or should I be slightly peeved at this early retirement? What do you think? 😕
