I have an Abit KT7A, would it be hard to swap it with another one? Where's the best place to get one?

Compusa has a kit to replace your old one. I ended up just taking the old fan off and leaving the bare hs because the fan for my zalman cpu hs blows air over the northbridge. My system is a lot more stable since I got the zalman 6000 hs, not sure if the cpu was getting too hot or if it was the northbridge....

my northbridge in my server was making this horrible sound and I just replaced it a couple days ago with the Zalman passive northbridge cooler. I got mine from SVC. For only 7.99, it was definitely worth it.

This is much cheaper than the kit I saw at Compusa and is better quality,if you can afford to wait for it to arrive.

youre very probably fine just taking the fan off and using the plain little heatsink. At worst there's the other two options, if youre concerned I'd go with the zalman.

Here's a story for you -- I took off the fan, just to see what would happen. I got to POST and went into BIOS, and the system froze. That is the first time I ever had my BIOS freeze up on me, so I didn't like it. But I tried it again, and went into Windows. These are the numbers that I have to compare:

-- W/ northbridge fan (sounded worn out) --
CPU - Idle: 44c, High: 52c
Chipset - Idle: 36c?, High: 36c

-- W/O northbridge fan (just heatsink) --
CPU: Idle: 41c, High: 45c
Chipset - Idle: ??c, High: 27c

Under high load, that is a 7c drop for CPU, and 9c drop for the chipset. WTF is that about?

Damn I'm stupid, thru all the excitement I didn't realize the case's hood was off. CPU temps are exactly the same, although the chipset's temps did drop to 27c under full cpu load.
