Its because you sweat salts, then the sweat evaporates after awhile of endurance running as you get dehydrated and the salt is abrasive. I would put tape over them or something.
You can sweat so much that when it dries your clothes are stiff with dried salt, as if they were over starched. It can happen while you are still running, so yeah.
Its amazing how much salt your body can store. No wonder eating a ton of salt and sitting around all day is bad for you.
When I was a kid I dove into the pool and scrapped up one nipple pretty bad on the rough concrete on the bottom. Now, I have one nipple that's an innie and the other is an outie.
