ok guys, I'm getting tired of my old rig, so I think I'm going to part it off on ebay and make a new one. My old one is about 1 1/2 years old.

Here's what I have on my new one so far. I'm not in a rush to build it, so if anyone knows any ways to make things cheaper, or any suggestions etc, let me know.
Also, I dont know what case to get, so any good recommendations on that as well?

what it is link cost after rebate
hd 320gb seagate sata 3.0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822148140 79.99
I think I'm going to get 2 hd's about this size. I'm sure they can go cheap so this price is just newegg price

SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102067 179.99
a bit more than I was hoping to pay, if anyone knows a good gfx card for $140 or so let me know

1 gb ram sticks
I want 2 gigs of ram total, no idea on what ram to get. Any good suggestions?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115004 186
I *think* this is the best cpu in my price range

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128012 129.99
I dont know too much on mobos, but the newegg reviews were good on this

XION Supernova XON-600F14R-201 ATX 600W http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817190012 119.99 89.99
it's 89.99 after rebate. This can be changed to something cheaper

Going to overclock ? You're mobo is good, but could come cheaper. P5N-e SLI for example. You have to consider wanting to get a p35 bearlake mobo though, which will let you drop in the newer intel 1333fsb cpu's, or not. Also, the cpu is okay, but you should get the e6420, with more cache, slightly faster, should be the same price.

The videocard you picked is pretty darn good, it's almost one of the best dx9 cards, and the best bang for buck at the moment. Order it quick, and it comes for 149.99 after rebates ! You don't really need 600W, this would be good enough, and is a good brand: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817104037

You should get ddr 667 or ddr 800, 2gb for about 100-110$ on newegg, after rebates. Can't go wrong with this for example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145034. This is even cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146565 but seems to be dieing on ppl, purchase at own risk I would say. Could also look into buying 2gb of ddr667 around 70$ with 4-4-4-12 timings. Mind you, you won't see much of an improvement with ddr 800 over ddr 667, but ddr800 will probably do just fine in a new rig you buy in 1.5 years. Also check to see what voltage the mobo can give, as some of this stuff wants 2.1v or 2.2v.

I don't think I'll need to overclcok, but I do have the really nice zalmans flower looking copper heatsink already, so is possible.
Can you give me links on newegg to other mobos I should downgrade to and what not?
Also, maybe a downgraded video card as well?

I personaly wouldn't downgrade the videocard. You'll want something at least in the 100$ dollar range, like a 7600gt, which would be the bare minimum I would buy right now. The x1950xt is SO much faster though, and it will stick with you for at least 2 years, if you don't game to hard, 150$ just is an offer you can't refuse, for the amount of performance it offers on top of 100$ cards.

As for the mobo, you'll have to decide, will you buy a new mobo at your next upgrade, or not ? You could go with this and it will let you upgrade to the 45nm die shrink intel is having later this year. Doesn't sound like a to good mobo though. This is a decent mobo, but won't let you upgrade to the newer chips, I do know it overclocks well though, and is simply a pretty stable mobo overall.

If you don't mind spending 130$ on the mobo, don't go for the one you selected yourself, but for this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128050

Can you tell us your approximate budget and also list the hardware you already have and don't plan to upgrade? Thanks

purdue - what's GCO, and what size hd is it you're talking about? (what make and model?)

sinn - lets assume I got nothing, I'm going to sell off my entire computer. All I will keep is mouse/keyboard and dual 19"'s
Lets assume I have a $600 budget.

also forgot to mention - I will be keeping my nice zalman heatsink that I have, but besides that, I dont think I'll reuse anything else. Oh ya, will reuse my sony dual layer cd-rw and will may as well keep my floppy drive too, but that's it.

$600 is a little tight but you can get this for $795 after rebates:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R $130

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB $80

XFX PVT80GGHD4 GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail $270

atriot eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $79

E6420 $186

XCLIO GOODPOWER 500W ATX 500W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CUL, TUV, CB, VDE, FIMKO, DEMKO, NEMKO, SEMKO - Retail $50

Pretty nice system especially if you OC the CPU a little (or alot ;) )

Not sure if I forgot anything,
Good luck.

my original post is about $650 or so ;)
1 note about the build you posted: I'm not that hardcore of a gammer, so I think that card is overkill for me, I'd rather pay around $170 for a card (as I had posted). I guess everyone seems to think the 6420 is the cpu I need, so I guess that's staying.
Anyone have suggestions for a decent case or case/psu combo?

Also, that mobo supports the new chips that are coming out correct? (sorry I havent kept up too much on the latest things)

Another thing, any idea how much the 6420 will cost if I wait till after the drop on july 22?

Here is the price drop table:

SO, forget about the E6420 and get the E6550 for $20 less which will perform quicker or get the E6750 for the same money which will perform quicker than both E6420 and E6600!
Yes that mobo supports the new 1333mhz fsb but NOT DDR3, but for $30 more you can get this one: (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16813128048) which will support both DDR2 and DDR3, also a great choice.

As for the video card I'd not go lower than 8800 GTS because it gives a ridiculous value for your money, but if you absoulutley have to then pick a $166 MSI 8600GTS, here's the link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127284 - Based on newegg reviews it is a really good card.

Good luck!

so you think that graphics card is better than SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB?

Also, any suggestions on cases?

Also, I would pay the $20 difference to get the 6750 anyways :)
Also, can you repost that motherboard link? newegg says it was deactivated for some reason...

Sinn has made some very good suggestions but I'd still stick with the X1950XT. It has better DX9 graphics performance, and csmaster has already said he's not a very hardcore gamer. He can always wait a year or so for some DX10 games to actually be mainstream, and more DX10 cards to show up on the market. No point in ever buying a factory overclocked card - you're just paying them to do something you can do yourself for free.
