Hi everybody
Things are running well so far, except for a couple of things.

-My cell phone's drivers won't install. It has a USB driver and software that get errors during install. I use these to transfer photo files, etc.

-BF2 voice chat won't work. Also, I get an "OS" error, and get booted from most servers.

These things worked well under my old XP installation.
Any ideas?

Obviously you'll need 64bit drivers from the cell phone manufacturer, have you checked with them?

The cell phone s/w may be more tricky. What errors do you get exactly?
You should complain to the manufacturer of the smart interface cable or USB cell phone that they need to fix their s/w for Vista 64. Complain publically in prominent forums and maybe they'll get incentive to do what they should have done two years ago.
You might be able to find 3rd party drivers that'll make it work even if the suggested ones don't.
Or if you get install errors and it doesn't install, maybe you can find a way to force the installation or install the actual drivers manually instead of through the installer software and then maybe it can work.

It shouldn't be a "signed drivers" thing for USB but if it is, you can turn off the need for signed drivers by hitting a given key sequence while the PC is booting. There are programs you can get to force it to do that every time. Stupid Microsoft.

BF2? I don't remember getting errors from BF2 other than the way punkbuster interfered with my firewall / anti-virus setup. Granted I never actually spoke on the voice chat, I usually used teamspeak (another program) while playing BF2 to talk with my team / clan. However I think I've heard BF2 voice chat from others and don't remember seeing any errors from the game / server specifically about that on Vista64.

Check your firewall settings in Vista and your router if Vista is automatically controlling it via UPNP... maybe the port(s) are just blocked ... of course if you have a 3rd party firewall like comodo or zone alarm or whatever that is crucial to configure properly as well.

For the cell phone, maybe you can run XP or DOS or whatever in a virtual machine under Vista 64 (download the current VirtualBox 1.6.4 or maybe the free VMWARE SERVER) and assuming the VM software you use supports sharing a USB device between the host (vista) and the guest OS (XP / DOS / vista 32 / whatever) then you might be able to use the cell phone s/w installed in the guest OS even if it won't work in the host OS after you configure the host to allow the guest to take control of the phone device over USB.

Or you could just dual-boot back to XP to do the pictures once a week or whatever.

Alternatives that may be more convenient are to just use BLUETOOTH or 802.11 (if your phone has the capability) to transfer the photos to the PC. Some phones can take a micro SD / transflash or similar card and read/write photos to that. Just pull it out and stick it in a cheap card reader attached to the PC over USB and copy files that way; most USB $5 card readers should work with VISTA 64.

I'll have to physicaly go down and ask the cell guys if they have 64 bit software/drivers.

As for SD cards, I'll have to buy one for that (my phone takes them, but I have just been useing the built-in memory so far). It has BlueTooth and IR, but I would have to get some kind of reciever for my PC, correct?

The phone, a SoftBank 910SH (new model here in Japan last year) came with a driver /software CD. Vista couldn't find the driver on the CD, and when I auto ran the CD, the install started with the USB driver, but quickly gave an error message about installing the driver, and closed the install program.

BF2 has a mic/volume test screen during install. My mic wouldn't register during that test. And of course, nothing during gametime.

And again, these all worked OK with my former hardware setup on XP.

Thanks again guys.

Try right clicking the program and running it in Winxp compatibility mode.
Vista handles sounds differently than XP.
I had some programs that allowed me to control the windows mixer for volume level that wouldn't work unless they were run in compatibility mode.

It also needs to run in admin mode. BF2's PunkBuster implementation is right in the executable (instead of using the service), so the executable has to run with admin privileges to run PB correctly.

I believe this is not correct about BF2. IIRC the PunkBuster integrated with BF2 is obsolete and unusable anyway. IIRC the correct thing to do is go to evenbalance.com and download the punk buster client for BF2 and for your OS, and install that manually as a distinct program. It does need admin. priv. to run. It will be the current version which is needed to play on contemporary servers anyway, not the obsolete version that came on the game disc.

Of course the above is only if you want PB and want to play on PB requiring / ranked servers. Otherwise you can forget the PB client.

BF2 itself, I never needed to run with admin. priv., I believe I just let Vista / BF2 setup install it "by default" however it does that. I know Vista's setup does have some hard-coded "rules/exceptions" on how to correctly install various popular software programs, so whatever it did for me worked. I'm sure I did this both pre-Vista SP1 and post Vista-SP1.

I can't promise you that export via SD card will transfer all the media / photos / mp3s / whatever that you want to transfer. Some phones prevent you from having full flexibility to transfer certain things from the handset in certain ways, e.g. photos, ring tones, games, whatever. Typically this is either due to inept design, or more commonly to force the user to use over-the-air and/or pay-to-use software tools or web sites to do the transfers.
In many cases, though, it can be useful to try the SD method depending on your particular phone's capabilities.

Bluetooth does require a bluetooth modem / dongle and bluetooth software for your PC, yes. They are usually available at a modest cost as small USB devices with accompanying software. Be careful to get BT hardware/software that is supported to be compatible with Vista 64, and which supports the various modes of use (file transfer mode pairing with cell phones, et. al.) that you desire.

There may be similar designed in artificial limits as to what kinds of transfers may be done over BT or IR depending on your handset's firmware.

Good luck trying to find out if the phone supports V64 with any available drivers. Usually product support personnel are rather uninformed about Vista 64 in many cases.

Try to determine if the cable you use for the USB link to the phone is a purely passive USB cable, it will tend to be very thin / flexible with no significantly uncommonly large bumps in the connector ends or along the length if it is a simple cable. Such a cable will cause no reaction on the PC whatsoever when you plug or unplug it from the PC if the other end of the cable is connected to nothing.

Some cables have a little electronic circuit built in to them which converts USB to some other custom interface that is compatible with the phone. In these cases at least part of the problem is to get a compatible driver for the "smart cable", and the other part of the problem is the installation and use of the application program that actually manages the phone's features on the PC. Since you have a very modern phone, I suspect it has USB directly integrated to the handset and does not require a "smart cable".

When the handset directly supports USB through a passive USB cable then you'll just need compatible drivers or application software for the handset itself, somewhat simplifying the problem.

Sometimes the actual manufacturer of the phone will have additional drivers / utilities for the phone in addition to what may be available from the vendor / carrier who sold or supports the phone product. e.g. nokia.com for a nokia phone even if it was sold and supported by the AT&T carrier network.

There is a site called http://www.howardforums.com/
which specializes in topics relating to various cell phones and networks. It is possible that someone there will know more about using your model of handset with Vista64. If there are other sites dedicated to the specific model or manufacturer of phone you use, people on those sites may have further resources to help.

Concerning BF2, can you get your microphone / sound working in many other applications for your Vista 64 PC without special configurations? I know that sometimes Vista may just have the default audio input and / or output devices set to use ports which are not the desired / proper ones, and that causes sound to be absent in various applications. Typically there may be a sound interface on the motherboard, but possibly there are also sound interfaces on add-in sound cards, or even add-in GPU graphics cards that support HDMI sound. If the microphone / speakers connect to one of these when Vista (or your specific application program) is set to use another of the possible interfaces, it will not appear to be working.

Going from the below links I found a couple of others which may or may not be useful in finding more recent downloadable utilities:
http://k-tai.sharp.co.jp/support/s/910sh/
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/support/3G/product/lineup.html
http://k-tai.sharp.co.jp/support/s/910sh/download.html

http://gphone.toshiba.co.jp/utility/phonemonitor.zip
http://gphone.toshiba.co.jp/utility/MyMobileV2.zip
http://gphone.toshiba.co.jp/utility/USBHostDriver.zip
Unfortunately in the USBHostDriver.zip in the usb_hostdriver_en.pdf file I see it says that Vista 32 only is supported. I don't know if this is the same file version which you have tried from your CD or not. If it is different I suppose it might be worth a try to see if it possibly could work nonetheless. At least it gives you another point of contact to request a version for Vista 64 anyway.

Here some people have found various work-around solutions for using a different model of handset with vista
(maybe vista 32, they do not say). Perhaps it will be possible to do a similar thing with yours.

I just got this phone yesterday from softbank and I?m using it with my vista OS. All I did was manually intall the .exe files rather than use the utility autorun. I opened the cd in explore then I clicked on each .exe that I needed to load?

F:\My Mobile V2\DISK1
then I ran setup.exe

F:\usb_driver
then I ran setup.exe

The beatjam 2007 is the only thing I couldn?t get to load and that?s because of some language error. Other than that the other two things loaded fine and I hooked up my phone via the usb cord, set the phone to transfer files and am now downloading my files to it.

I am sure that you do not NEED 2 use beetjam to transfer files. Just transfer AAC files via bluetooth

I got Softbank?s 911T ? the Utility software disc is verifibly USELESS. It contains 3 programs,
1) USB driver
2) My Mobile V2
3) Best Jam
none of which will properly install onto windows XP or windows Vista ? regardless of language, English or Japanese.

The Customer Suport people at Softbank were useless as well ? one woman told me that all I had to do to fix this problem was download BeatJam 2007 and the others would work as well. Yeah, right.

Took a while on my own, but I finally found the proper files that must be installed:
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/suppo...11t/mobile_usb_dl.html
There are 3 download buttons, one for each program. Downloand each, install, reboot, plug up your new 911T by USB, and voila, you?re in business.

It?s a shame that the Softbank customer support people couldn?t direct me to that page themselves.

You cannot simply Bluetooth music to the phone. There is some kind of DRM protection that gives a FTP error. You have to use Beatjam and the USB cable, and to install BeatJam you need to change the system locale for non unicode programs to Japanese (Japan) in the administrative tab of the regional and language options control panel. Then Beatjam thinks you are installing it on a Japanese system and runs just fine. Also, I recommend everyone get the Beatjam 2007 Vista update from the Just Systems website (http://www3.justsystem.co.jp/d...am/up/win/070801.html) and install that before running BeatJam for the first time.

Good luck

P.S. You?ll also need the Vista USB drivers from the previous link from TOM

-The BF issue was due to UAC. Turned it off, no worries.

-The cell phone: I ended up buying a 2GB micro SD card (really cheap now!), and could transfer files to that. However, my OS will not allow access to my SD card! More on that issue under "Peripherals".
