Newer Roombas are hackable and can be remote controlled. They also sell one without the vacuum motor that is specifically made for robotics development.

Are they smarter or do they still randomly bump around the house until the battery runs out?

Just got a Neato XV-11, even though it's the older model it's still AMAZING. We initially had some issues with the neato not being able to find 'home' but that was quickly solved by placing it in a more open area.

The major perk to this over roombas is that it splits areas up into manageable squares and vacuums up and down. This way it doesn't look like a drunk monkey vacuumed your house.

It has vacuumed my whole 1500sq foot house two days in a row without any issues. I'm seriously impressed and amazed!
