My new used computer won't post.

Okay I just assembled a computer from used parts. The power comes on the fans spin and the drives have power. But the monitor never comes on and there aren't any beeps from the speaker. Any ideas?
 
do you happen to know if all the parts worked at one time, even seperately? are there beeps when you take things like the cpu, video card or ram out? have you tried to clear the cmos when it first didnt post for you? do you have more spare parts? what are the specs of the new used pc your building by the way?
 
Well the system is an Athlon64 3000+ on a k8n-e. Those are the parts that I bought. I use a video card and memory that I just pulled from another system so I know those are good.

There aren't any beeps if I remove individual components. Just tried clearing the cmos, to no effect. I do have another a64 computer, but it would be extremely inconvient to have to take that one apart. Taking that one apart is a last resort type thing.
 
ohh i have the same board, but its the deluxe, i ran into this same exact problem, cleared the cmos tried a different ram, video card (agp to old school pci card), different power supply, etc. i could never get it to post again, so i ordered a s939 board with a cpu, as soon as that was 1/2 way her the k8ne deluxe started posting again! this was over the course of 3 days, 100 test, etc that narrowed it down to the mobo from maybe me going nuts on overclocks for a year straight. the chipset runs very hot too. i think your going through the same exact thing i did, as soon as you give up and come back to it 2 days later it will work too with no changes. :roll: but in the mean time i think your going to have to test those parts since it could be the mobo. do you overclock anyway?
 
It's sounding like it's the board, oh and I do have the deluxe version. No I don't overclock, even if I did, haven't had the chance to with this system.
 
it is the board in your case too. though it will work again once you dont care about the board anymore, trust me on it! asus gives 3 yr warranty from what i remember so you can rma it.
 
Have you tried a diagnostic P.O.S.T. card? Just plug it into a PCI slot and it'll give you a code you can look up to pin point the non boot problem. I picked one up on eBay for under $12. It's a real time saver and a very useful thing to have if you build systems.
 
Check the RAM. Unlike the olden days, some newer mobos just won't POST without viable RAM -- or RAM it doesn't dislike. That was the problem with my MSI board.
 
What about the power supply? Do you have to use any adaptors to get it to fit the motherboard ATX connection? Is the PSU strong enough for the system? Just a thought. It gets overlooked sometimes.
