I was on a two-lane road last Saturday that narrowed down to one-lane. I happened to look into my rear-view mirror and saw a big ass SUV bearing down on me headed to my right. I had to jam on my brakes so it could pass me on my right before it ran out of road. This was in a busy residential area so there was no shoulder, just curb and sidewalk.

I guess some pople think that just because they have a two ton vehicle they own the road.

What's with the anti-SUV idiots today? Your post has nothing to do with what ocurred. If you have a problem with SUV drivers, go up to one and cuss him out. That way when he beats you to death with his Louisville slugger, the gene pool will be that much healthier.

You sound like a dumb "I'm gonna beat you up" piece of sh!t. Hurrhh duurhhh Lousville Slugger duurhhhh duurhh NASCAR duurhhhh. Ignoramus.

Give me a break. You know damn well SUV drivers are the ones who always pull way up in the left lane so no one can make a right turn on red.

I swear to God. Everyone who threatens beating with a "Louisville slugger" is inbred or at least white trash, so I don't get the gene pool comment.

Actually I am the opposite. A mild-mannered book worm. The reason I posted what I did is because 1) your post wasn't even remotely on-topic and 2) you're an arrogant prick. I don't give a rat's ass how you feel about SUV's and I would appreciate it if you would take your anti-SUV BS somewhere where it actually applies.

SUV haters: if you learned to drive on public roads with trucks, pickups, and minivans in existence since... forever... what's the problem with SUVs and not being able to see around them ?

BTW, the Ford F150 is the most sold vehicle in America. Don't go telling me it's because there's just so many of these SUVs that contribute to the problems they supposedly cause... you guys can shove it up your tightwad ___.

right, because you know better than he does what he can or can't see around when he's driving. :disgust: the irony is killing me.

edit:

just to clarify for all you "no world-view exists other than my own" retards: people who drive cars can't see around SUV's or trucks when they pull up next to one at an intersection. that means if the SUV is waiting to turn left, everyone else has to wait, too, or risk getting nailed like the original poster. the whole point of Feldenak's post was to point out to the original poster that he has no leg to stand on in complaining about that big truck, because he puts tons of people into the same position every day.

"need" the space? buy a minivan. they have lots more usable space, lower load heights, and better handling. people in cars can see over the hoods at intersections, and they don't run over smaller vehicles when they hit them or get flipped over by crazy girls in escorts. you can even get them with four wheel drive if you live where it snows.

This guy gets the point. I'm not a huge fan of SUVs, but I realize they have their place and they serve some important purposes. Unfortunately there's way more on the road than there needs to be, and they make the roads a lot more dangerous for those of us who drive cars.

How the heck do you know? Where you there? This was my best friend from HS and college and my roommate. I thought he was going to die. Yes. He did get smacked by a Ford Escort. Right in between the front and rear wheel. The girl dug underneath hitting him at about 35-40 mph and flipped him 6 times onto someone's lawn. All she got was a busted grill and hood. His truck was completely demolished. He had to get microsurgery to repair his arm because it shattered the glass moonroof he had.

Also, name me a minivan you could get in 2002 with AWD. I can name 2. The Chrysler Town and Country and the Chevy Venture. Tell me with a straight face you'd recommend either of those 2 minivans. Even now, the only minivan people would consider is the Toyota Sienna. Not much of a choice if you ask me. You can call me vain if you want but everyone is vain when it comes to the vehicles they choose. If they weren't everyone would still be driving model Ts.

Thats not a very intelligent response.

As far as it goes, anyone who drives on a regular basis could almost certainly tell you that the number of idiots who drive SUV's are seemingly disproportionate to thoose who dont.

I can't tell you how many times I see another SUV parked OVER the line, like, rear bumper past it, at an intersection because they are waiting for the slightest chance to make their turn, then, guess what, light turns and the smacktard is blocking the intersection.

I also cant count on two hands how many times I've nearly been run off the road by SUV drivers, how many times has it happened because of a sedan or coupe driver? Once, in snow.

So yeah you have to excuse some peole for getting a little sick and tired of SUV's. Not neccisarily because YOU are the problem, but because the idiots just seem to flock to SUV's like their no tomorrow.

But seriously your response doesn't win anyone over.

Why would I try to win people over that are being openly hostile and hijacking my thread? I don't owe those jerkoffs a damn thing. Hey I'm sorry if you had a bad experience with someone in an SUV, but I'm not that person. And I don't need to take that crap off of anyone.

I see people in Ford Mustangs do this more often than people in trucks and SUV's. Always weaving in and out of traffic and cutting people off. Bungholes!

uh oh... touchy subject.

i personally dont care what people drive... i just wish drivers would be more considerate of other people driving around them and maybe give a thought of how it would be like in their shoes... like people who are turning right at 2mph... or people slowing down traffic then when the light turns yellow they suddenly floor it.

Just because you only need a smaller car does not give you the right to pass judgement on others. I understand quite well how hard it is to see around larger vehicles, and I own a Honda Accord and drive it daily. Regardless, you don't see the point. The truck was PARKED in the middle of a street lane where there was no allowed parking. It caused a dangerous condition. People pulling up to intersections in SUV's IS NOT the same thing. The fact you don't recognize this tells me you are nothing but a troll.

the only difference is one method of obstructing traffic's view of the road doesn't have a law passed against it and one does. just because an officer can't write you a ticket for causing a dangerous situation doesn't mean you didn't cause it.

if you don't need the room of a minivan/larger SUV, why not buy a station wagon? all the same things apply: vastly safer handling, plenty of room, 4 wheel drive an option on many, third row seating an option in some, and you can get them that are pretty quick (S4, subarus, turbo volvos, saab 9-5, Lexus IS300) and won't make you look like a soccer dad. i'll give you credit for at least buying a car-based SUV, but why do you need to be so high up other than to look "cool?"

rh71: some people do need big vehicles. some people need work trucks. some people live on ranchs or at the top of steep dirt driveways. but the problem is that when it becomes the "cool" vehicle to own and trucks are out-selling cars by a long shot, you end up with a lot more tall-ass vehicles on the road than ever before. and that adds up to a lot more dangerous situations at intersections than if only the people who needed tall vehicles bought them. i get a lot less pissed off at the Joe's Window Services pickup than I do at Soccer Mom or Small Penis Complex Man in their Pilot/Tahoe/Hummer/Highlander/F-350/etc, because I know Joe needs that tall vehicle for carrying more than one person, their purse, and Macy's bags (or, to be fair, a water cooler, a labrador and a couple kids with their shin guards). And I see Joe a lot less often. so i just wish SUV drivers would use their heads a little and buy what fills their needs versus what they think is stylish.

my point exactly. a car would not have flipped in that situation (or at least not 6 times), because the escort would not have plowed underneath a car. it would have taken the blow in the door, where all cars are designed to take just such a blow. a nasty jolt, for sure, but i'd take that over flipping 6 times and putting my arm through a moonroof.

no, i wouldn't recommend those vans. they suck. but the sienna is considered by journalists to be one of the best vans in the buisness, a benchmark for the industry. not much of a choice to make, but a pretty damn good vehicle, and from a company that has been making 4 wheel drive vans for a long time (and that last a long time).

I tried station wagons. They were no larger than sedans, only had a bit more room in back. But the baby seat problem still existed. I like the car feel of the Highlander, and the extra space is nice when I need it, which is all the time now. I still love driving my Accord when I'm by myself. It's easy to get in and out of spaces. But it's not practical for a family, and neither were any of the station wagons we tried.

And my point is that it doesn't necessarily have to be an SUV that causes damage. Any idiot in a vehicle can do the same.

Also, the Sienna did not have AWD before this model. Sure I like the new one but it is brand new and there is a 6 month wait list for it. When I bought my SUV in 2002, it was not available.

For those people that mention station wagons, do you realize a station wagon is just a car with a bigger trunk? An S4? Have you sat in that thing? It's tiny. If you have a manual (which I know I would prefer) and you put a child seat behind the driver, you will be cramped. In fact, most stations wagons I can think of will not provide any more useful space in the back than a sedan.

Its amazing how some of you bashers think you know it all. You think some people are stupid not to think things through and that your needs are exactly what their needs should be? You bash wyvrn for wanting more room because he has a child seat in the back? Do you guys even have children? Have you ever sat in a car with child seats in them? Do you even know what wyvrn uses his SUV for?

I supposed all he uses it for is to talk on a cell phone while speeding alone. Sheesh, talk about ignorance.

? when has a pickup truck been a SUV?

I say the OP was at fault the law found him at fault if there are circumstances otherwise explore them and be done with it. I have found most 'shouldn't have been' topics where the reporter is the one cited are posted/spoke of by those in denial.

Lastly, most sold in America doesn't make for most popular daily driver...and where exactly is this source???

By observation I wouldn't say the F-150 is the most popular around here by a long shot.

I don't have a problem with SuVs at all. I do not own one now, but there is always somebody in my family that does. However my problem comes when people drive SuVs with the same mentality they use when driving cars. Trying to take faster and tighter turns, zipping through traffic, trying to squeeze into that 'compact only' parking spot, etcetera. I blame the incompotent drivers, not the vehicles. It just seems that so many people (and I will be the sexist bastard that says it does seem to be more women than men) do not realize they are driving a larger vehicle and therefore do not adapt their driving skills accordingly.

SUV haters are all idiots.....theres a blanket statement for you.....i dont' get it. "You cause dangerous situations everytime you drive your SUV" WTF?!?! Just because you can't see past their hood? That's so lame, get off the road then.....i drive a 4runner, based on a pickup truck....generally i use it as my daily driver, it fits the 3/4 people i find myself driving around quite often, plus all of our music equipment....a few guitars, a keyboard, an amp, a few speakers....it all works out great. My suburban....yep, pilled all 8 of us in there and went out to dinner, i don't use it except when i need it to haul things that won't fit in the toyota. get off of your high horses "everyone should drive econo-boxes".....officer, there was a tree, so i didn't see the car comming.....learn to drive with visual obstructions....what about those things hanging on your mirror? tinted windows? stickers on the window?

Hypothetically, if she was driving an SUV, your friend may not be alive.

Maybe but hypothetically she might not have been driving as fast because she would be more cautious or hypothetically she could have just damaged the right side of the car or hypothetically.....

I'll tell you:
1. In the past, your vision wasn't blocked by the _multitude_ of behemoth vehicles in front of you. You could get around them and drive away.
2. In the past, your odds of getting mutilated by some idiot soccer mom/dad were a lot smaller. I honestly believe the sense of safety that SUVs give leads to more careless driving. People think they "own the road".
3. In the past, people understood that for 90% of driving, a _car_ works fine.

Side note: That poor Nissan! :(

What is this past you are talking about?

In the past, people didn't have airbags. People drove around 2 1/2 ton monster station wagons without their seat belts. The average car did not have 200HP and anything with 300HP was unheard of unless it was an exotic. Now people scoff at 300HP.

If you look at insurance rates, you'll notice the most expensive rates are for young people driving fast cars not for middle aged people driving SUVs.

Of course it pisses me off when I see people driving wrecklessly, weaving in and out of traffic and tailgating but the majority of people who do that are guys in fast cars not SUVs.

I was in the inside turn lane of the double left turn lanes. There was a big truck to my left. When the light changed, I pulled out, and suddenly a car that ran the red light tore off my front bumper.

He was talking on a cell phone, and had no insurance. If I had been ten feet forward, I would have gotten t-boned and been slaughtered.

I dunno I am 23 and own a firebird, and my insurance rates are actually very low for my age. I pay barely over $600 every six months for full coverage. But it might also be because I have no accidents or tickets what so ever.

Well, when I was 27, I had a license for 9 years, no tickets ever, no accidents ever, had the car garaged, had a good paying job and All-State wanted $7500 a year for a new Prelude SH.

It's Allstate, thats all I need to say, they wanted $6000 from me.... thats about $4800 more then what I pay now.
