Aw man this sucks. I haven't even had it 6 months! Stupid one-way streets in Dallas. I stopped at a stop sign, and on my right was a produce truck which I could not see around. I stopped before the stop sign and looked down the street. I thought there was no traffic. So I SLOWLY pulled out into the street and got hit by a lady in a Nissan something. She didn't even try to swerve, just ran right into me. Damn she was in the blind spot created by that truck, couldn't have been more than 30 feet of street she could hide in. @#$%@&!!!

Luckily it's only my bumper thats caved in and no other damage, but it's gonna cost me a bunch. Her car had minor damage which I imagine shouldn't be too expensive. Technically I am at fault, but it was really that stupid trucks' fault for sitting on the corner of an intersection where he isn't "allowed" to park.

I am trying to find out how much it would cost to replace a bumper on a Toyota Highlander, but local places won't even give me parts costs unless I bring it in. Any way of finding this online?

update: Well I just got a call from my insurance company. That was fast. Going to get an estimate on repairs. I wish the lady would have let me pay for hers out of pocket, and not reported it. Would have saved the rate hike thats coming. Ain't life great!

You got lucky - at least you still have your truck. I did almost exactly the same thing about a year ago in a '93 Blazer (I loved that truck), but mine was beyond repair - the guy hit the front-passenger side wheel with his stupid little two-seater sports car, and bent the axle up under the truck. Then, between that and the ditch that I landed in when the truck quit moving, the frame got all bent out of shape. Now it's sitting in my garage, and the only good pieces left on it are the engine, transmission, and rear axle. :(

Pulling out into blind intersections is one of my biggest driving fears.

Being at an intersection, and parking illegaly on a street corner, are two completely different things. So are the size of my Highlander and this truck. Go troll your anti-SUV BS somewhere else please.

Pulling out into blind intersections is one of my biggest driving fears.

Yep, I shouldn't have done it. And it wasn't completely blind either, just a small patch of road that a car happened to be driving down. The chances are probably 1 in 100,000 :( Ah well live and learn.

What's with the anti-SUV idiots today? Your post has nothing to do with what ocurred. If you have a problem with SUV drivers, go up to one and cuss him out. That way when he beats you to death with his Louisville slugger, the gene pool will be that much healthier.

in the town i work, they are always illegally parked like the truck in the OP.
that sucks, though. all sorts of HUGE vehicles make it hard as hell to see anything in any semi-populated city like environment.

but at least you are ok and no is the lady that hit you.

somewhat related: i was driving home last night between 11-12 at night and someone pulled out of a parking lot and continued to drive the wrong way down the one way street i was driving on. scary!

The same exact thing ALMOST happened to me yesterday. I was driving my mother in law's vehicle (SUV also) and was stopped at a stop sign waiting to make a left turn and I couldn't see out so I had to keep inching out. When I finally was able to see. There was a truck coming slowly in the lane that I wanted to turn in so I had plenty of time to make the turn. Just as I turned a car swerved around the truck and came flying out of nowhere and came within inches of nailing us.

The odd thing is that in my mind I said "hmm I should probably accelerate through the turn" but I didn't which actually saved us from getting T-boned.

on my way to work yesterday, some retarded ass high school chick drove right through a stop sign. i mean no brakes, no looking, just straight through it. i know she knows it is there because i see her everyday and she always stops. i was on the road that doesnt stop, so i just went along not paying much attention until she drove up and kept going. i was like OMG WTF and since i am in a big truck it was almost impossible to miss her. i swear our bumpers tongue twisted because i cant believe we missed. i swerved, hit the brakes, and fishtailed a little after she was out of range. i was going to brighten her day with a "you fvcking ignorant asshole bitch" but she didnt get out, i calmed down, and im fine now. phew.

You sound like a dumb "I'm gonna beat you up" piece of sh!t. Hurrhh duurhhh Lousville Slugger duurhhhh duurhh NASCAR duurhhhh. Ignoramus.

Give me a break. You know damn well SUV drivers are the ones who always pull way up in the left lane so no one can make a right turn on red.

I swear to God. Everyone who threatens beating with a "Louisville slugger" is inbred or at least white trash, so I don't get the gene pool comment.

Actually I am the opposite. A mild-mannered book worm. The reason I posted what I did is because 1) your post wasn't even remotely on-topic and 2) you're an arrogant prick. I don't give a rat's ass how you feel about SUV's and I would appreciate it if you would take your anti-SUV BS somewhere where it actually applies.

in all honesty, i do pull up, but i keep my left tires on my line, so anyone that wants to get by can, if i'm in the right lane anyways. Your comments are very stereotypical, i do drive an SUV, two of them actually...i consider myself a polite driver, i look AND signal before lane changes, don't cut people off, if i'm driving in the left lane on a highway, and someone wants to pass, even if i'm already going 5/10 over.....i get over and let them pass. Put your glasses on, since you seem to only see the SUV's that do it, i'm 100% sure others do as well, but it seems SUV's are an easy target for you, that and my gas guzzling SUV only gets 20mpg city......boohoo...

Sorry to hear about the car.

On the topic of being anti-SUV, its a 2 way street. What about people who have cars that don't know how to drive either?

My friend was going down the road in his Pathfinder when somebody ran a stop sign and plowed right into the middle of his truck with her Ford Escort. Her car dug under his and flipped him over 6 times and he shattered the moonroof with his arm.

The damage? His car. Total wreck. Lucky he survived but he had major damage to his arm. Her? Busted hood.

Doesn't matter what you drive. Everything is dangerous if you don't know how to drive.

So why do you drive an SUV?

I have a family and it's much more convenient to have a vehicle with enough room. We used to have two four door sedans, and to fit the baby seat in the back, you had to move the chairs in front all the way up. It wasn't comfortable and actually could be dangerous to force the driver to sit in a bad position. The Highlander gives us enough room.

As far as gas goes, we bought a 4cyl Highlander which gets identical mileage to my 4cyl Accord. 27 mpg on highway, and 21 city. So far it's as good as advertised. So I really am sick of the stereotypes people like to put on SUV owners. If you don't like my car, you can kiss my ass!

right, because you know better than he does what he can or can't see around when he's driving. :disgust: the irony is killing me.

edit:

just to clarify for all you "no world-view exists other than my own" retards: people who drive cars can't see around SUV's or trucks when they pull up next to one at an intersection. that means if the SUV is waiting to turn left, everyone else has to wait, too, or risk getting nailed like the original poster. the whole point of Feldenak's post was to point out to the original poster that he has no leg to stand on in complaining about that big truck, because he puts tons of people into the same position every day.

"need" the space? buy a minivan. they have lots more usable space, lower load heights, and better handling. people in cars can see over the hoods at intersections, and they don't run over smaller vehicles when they hit them or get flipped over by crazy girls in escorts. you can even get them with four wheel drive if you live where it snows.

Most minivans we test drove were behemoths compared to the Highlander. Do you even know what one looks like? Besides, if you have a need for a larger car, I don't any reason why not to buy one. Just because you only need a smaller car does not give you the right to pass judgement on others. I understand quite well how hard it is to see around larger vehicles, and I own a Honda Accord and drive it daily. Regardless, you don't see the point. The truck was PARKED in the middle of a street lane where there was no allowed parking. It caused a dangerous condition. People pulling up to intersections in SUV's IS NOT the same thing. The fact you don't recognize this tells me you are nothing but a troll.

Highlander is not an SUV.

Its a car with lots of ground clearance

As a matter of fact, it's built on the Camry platform. Not really an off road vehicle as much as an oversized sedan. That's one of the reasons we bought it as I don't like really large vehicles. You'll never catch me driving a Yukon, for instance.

Thats not a very intelligent response.

As far as it goes, anyone who drives on a regular basis could almost certainly tell you that the number of idiots who drive SUV's are seemingly disproportionate to thoose who dont.

I can't tell you how many times I see another SUV parked OVER the line, like, rear bumper past it, at an intersection because they are waiting for the slightest chance to make their turn, then, guess what, light turns and the smacktard is blocking the intersection.

I also cant count on two hands how many times I've nearly been run off the road by SUV drivers, how many times has it happened because of a sedan or coupe driver? Once, in snow.

So yeah you have to excuse some peole for getting a little sick and tired of SUV's. Not neccisarily because YOU are the problem, but because the idiots just seem to flock to SUV's like their no tomorrow.

But seriously your response doesn't win anyone over.
