Wow, a man that REALLY knows knives. Sweet. Talk to me. Learn me a thing or three, wouldja? What's the difference? Which holds an edge longer? Which holds a sharper edge? Which is better for what application? Neither the box nor the knife is labelled which 440.

Not everything you buy has to be 100%. Sometimes you get it just because it looks 'cool'.

440A is the most rust resistant, but the worst in edge retention.
440C is better edge retention, rusts a bit easier, but it's a pretty good knife steel for the less expensive knives. Doesnt really excel in any areas, but it does alright.
440V, now that I think about it, is not what your knife is made of. Excellent edge retention, but a huge PITA to sharpen.
I'll post more later, but I've got to leave work now. I might not post more till tomorrow, I'm going to the Irish Festival tonight, and a drunken post the likes of "sa d fkaljhs d fghas;(" isnt going to be helpful.

This thing didn't take long to gain an edge at all. Slapping it closed a few times has already slightly dulled a small spot on the tip of the blade. The stupid company that build this thing put a bolt down near the bottom of the handle to catch the blade when it closes instead of putting it up farther and catching the blade in the open cut-out farther up the blade where there's no edge.

Well, I missed my ride, so I can nef for a few more minutes until the bus comes around. Based on the ease of putting an edge on it, I'd guess it's 440A. Which is what my Kershaw Chive is made of, though chances are my coating is superior to your coatingOf course, the Kershaw is much smaller, but it also uses SpeedSafe, so it has it's own little "cool" factor to it. It's not a bad steel, and trust me when I say it could be worse. Of course, a lot depends on the heat treatment the maker gave it.
