512MB PC133 == $40 on pricewatch ...

ultra160 scsi controller = $60 on pricewatch ...

I don't like waiting around to do my high quality audio editing, and video editing would be a nice thing to try too...

I'd like ta build me a little black box filled with 8 DIMM slots, and a scsi interface...

yeah, I know its more complicated than that, but it just struck me as a really cool idea...

i don't know where to look for memory controllers, and I wouldn't have the money to do it right now anyway, but wouldn't it rock to have a 4GB drive that would actually use all the bandwidth a high end scsi card could offer? if you had a pci-x slot on your mobo, you could even go with a good ole ultra320 and max that sucka out too...

I wonder if the price between setting up a raid 0 with cheap drives and building a nice solid state storage device will ever cross ... RAM is getting cheaper all the time right?

well, i'm done bein stupid, but I got a kick out of the thought :)

They have PCI cards that have SDR Dimm slots on them for this purpose, i think you can bring them up to around 4gb (4x1gb). Thing is they probably cost quite a bit themselves, and it wouldn't be that much fun :)

yeah, the fun would totally be in building the thing myself and being able to say "hey look, I did that."

if I did try to do the project, I could prolly get by at about 600 dollars ...

another interesting use I thought of for such a device would be to benchmark differnt scsi controllers ... maxing out an entire scsi channel with one device would give you a good idea of just how much overhead each controller has to deal with when doing transferes.

Did anyone ever play that old gameboy game pipedream? That thing was difficult...
