ok, so aside from the video card, will this computer last 3 yrs...

We can guess, but nobody is going to be able to give you an answer that's even remotely certain ;)

I think a 3000+ A64 system is a good bet for trying to last a while though in your price range.

A couple years from now, having a 3200+ vs a 3000+ is not going to matter at all. It's like looking back now and thinking if a 1800+ is vastly superior to a 1600+ or something... they're both old and one is not going to do anything the other wont do.

I'm just going to point out that you might want to look for a black optical drive to match the case. Other than that, everything there looks compatable, just the RAM looks a little sketchy.

yes get the corsair value select it will run at 2.5-3-3-7 at 220 mhz, much better than what wintec can do. also get a different case. This one is bad value as it doesn't even come with any fans, plus crap PSU. Aspire has better cases, with better PSUs and better cooling.

Also for CPU get a Venice 3000+ instead of the winchester 3500+, it will overclock MUCH higher.

Venice 3000+ retail $156
Chaintech VNF4 $88
Corsair Value Select 2x512MB $80
Hardrive - get one of the 160GB for $50 after rebate deals which come up every week
Video card - X800XL $250
DVD-RW $50
Case - X-Dreamer (or similar) for $60

Total: $725

it's really very very easy especially with Athlon 64 CPUs and nforce motherboards. Just to give you the bottom line - most Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 939), which run stock at 1.8 GHz, can be run stably at 2.4 GHz (equivalent to 3800+). That's a 33% performance increase, and you don't need any special components or equipement (you can even use the stock AMD heatsink which comes with the retail CPU). The best overclockers are nForce4 motherboards, and A64 of the new Venice core revision (they may be able to reach 2.7-2.8 GHz).

hey guys, thanks for all your input...here is the computer I put together.

CPU: AMD 3000+ Venice
Motherboard: Asus A8V Deluxe(AGP)
Memory: Corsair ValueSelect pc3200 RAM 2x512
Graphics: LeadTek 6600GT(AGP)
Optical: NEC 3520A
HD: Maxtor 200 gb 7200 8mb SATA

Now what I need is a case and PSU. Can you guys help me find them for around $120. I dont want LEDs and lights and I would prefer it to be aluminum. I've been looking but I cant find anything I like. Thanks once again.

The case is really up to your own personal preference. A great, cheap, brand-name, quality PSU is the XClio 450W with dual +12V rails for ~$50. I'm too lazy to post the link, but just go to Newegg.com and enter XClio 450W in the search.

yeah he could still game fine with a sempron because video card will make the major difference here not the difference from sempron to a a64.

however some a64 models sit at price points which make them really nice purchases, pretty much worth any extra money over the budget sempron.
