And do you have anything from previous computers you can re-use? Do you have a case, etc.? Do you want a monitor recomendation as well? Is noise a concern? What size comp are you looking for?
 
sorry for not giving any details. I want to play the newer games...half life 2, battlefield 2, age of empires 3...etc

No, I dont have an old comp that I can take apart.

edit: i dont need speakers keyboard or a mouse

I stand by this as a good general purpose sub-$700 system, but I might refine it if you'd just tell us what you plan on doing with your computer

I concur. However, not everyone needs a DVD burner, and I'm not the biggest fan of that case. Also, he might be benifited by going with a seperate PSU and a cheapo case, if he really wants to maximize price/performance.

If you need everything, including OS and a monitor, I dont know how much you can do for $700....
CRT - $100 (any 17")
CPU - $150 (3000+ 939)
RAM - $100 (Corsair/Mushkin, etc. Value RAM 1Gb)
GPU - $150 (6600 GT)
OS - $100 (if you take Home or find Pro cheap)
Board - $80 (Chaintech VNF4/MSI K8N Neo4)
HDD - $80 (Any 120/160 Gb)
CDROM - $25 (Anything)
Case/PSU - $65 (Antec, etc.)

These are basic components and that brings you to $850. Unless you go Sempron, which I dont think you would want if you want to play new games, and even then you prob. won't get there. I think it would be tough to shave $150 from this, and it doesn't include shipping or anything.

oh... i didnt think about it that way... i dont know what he means now that you said that...

if you do have windows and a monitor, then take what I said and upgrade the CDROM ($25) to CDRW/DVD ($35) combo and upgrade something else (case, HDD), with the leftovers, if there are any
 
slithery, how long will this system last me...i mean to play current games and such. Cause i'm trying to get it to last for at least 3 yrs. if it wont, i'm willing to spend a 100 to 150 extra dollars to make sure it'll last for 3 yrs

That system will play current games, but if you have some dough you might put it toward a better graphics card and processor. In that order. A radeon x800xl might be good to look at as well as the newer venice cores.
 
That system will work, but that VC will not play new games 3 yrs. from now very well. I suggest just getting a 6600 GT, and then upgrading later when you feel the need. Even a 6800 GT will struggle with the latest games in 3 yrs. IMO, VC's get outdated much quicker than any other piece of hardware.

This system would work as well, and it's cheap. Socket 754 and AGP would severely limit your upgrade options though. Also if I had left out the case/psu, HD and dvd burner as choseman did the price difference wouldn't be that much between the two configurations. With socket 939 you get lots of upgrade options (including dual core) and PCI-E which seems to be taking over as the new standard.
