My new PC is totally *&#@'d up

So i built a new PC a few weeks ago, and everything worked fine. The contents were as follows:
A64 3000+ (939)
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
2x512MB PQI PC4000 DDR
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300GB
Vantec VAN-520
TDK DVD-R/W

Anyways, after a few days, the hard drive stopped showing up. If i plugged it into a Silicon Image SATA port, the raid driver picked it up, but the plug-and-play SATA stopped working. So i called Asus, and after many problems, they said that either there was a grounding problem or the controller had died. So i switched cases, still didn't work, and decided to return the board. I bought a Chaintech VNF4/Ultra, which whould surely work, right? Well, at first it did, but then it stopped working just like the other one. Every once in a while, after i mess with the drive a bit, it detects it, and boots fine, but not very often. Also, i bought a cheap IDE drive, which shows up fine, but the windows installer keeps crashing midway through. A blue screen pops up, says windows shut down to prevent damage to my computer. It says to try disabling memory options like caching and shadowing in the BIOS. Then it dumps physical memory. I have no idea what this means, but recently, when i got the SATA drive to boot once, it also crashed and gave the same error. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is? Everyone in tech support i've talked to has not been able to answer my question. Oh, also, i emailed chaintech about my boot code of 75, which they said there is an IDE device preventing proper boot up, but unplugged all IDE devices and the error code doesn't change, so i don't know what to do. I'm thinking there is either 1) a PSU problem, since i've seen good reviews of the drive, but Maximum PC recently reviewed it and said it was horrible, 2) Memory, since it's not officially on the approved memory list, even though it's a major brand, or 3) an incompatibility with DM10 drives and NF4 boards.

I had a similar problem recently with a system I built for someone, Intel P4 with an ASUS board and three Maxtor DiamondMax10 SATA drives. Intermittently the drives would not be detected during post. Eventually, I swapped the drives for Seagates and the problems disappeared.

A quick lookup at Newegg shows that PQI 512MB PC4000 modules are spec'ed for 2.8 volts. What voltages have you been using?

You don't list what brand/wattage of power supply you are using. Please let us know as this may be the root of your problems.

thanks 🙂
