hi everyone. i just installed my new 2.6C. HT is enabled in the BIOS, however windows XP only sees one CPU (when i guess enabling HT should make windows see two CPUs?). any ideas?

yes...the interesting part is that it is the only option under "view/CPU history." which means windows only see one CPU. i think i'm going to flash to the most recent BIOS and see what happens. although i do have the option to enable/disable HT in my current BIOS, which would make one think that the BIOS version isn't the issue, but you never know...

nevermind...i guess windows does see two CPUs. should i remove one or both CPUs from the list?

*edit* by the way, i did go into the BIOS, disable HT, restart and enable it again just to see if it might start working the 2nd time around, but no such luck...

So, you DO have 2 CPU's in device manager? That is a good sign!

When you go to task manager, do you have View->CPU history set to 1 graph per CPU?

Yes, but that's the kicker...its still only showing one graph. and its my only option under view -> CPU history, when it should also have a "one graph, all CPUs" option as well. what gives?

Download and install Speedfan (great program anyway). It has a CPU util display. See if it shows 2 CPu's

you mean the small usage bar on the "readings" tab? its at 100%, and there's only one of them.

There should be two of them :(

Delete both CPU's from device manager, reboot, see what happens when re detected??

What kind of PC in device manager? I have ACPI Multiprocessor PC

i have an ACPI PC, but not an ACPI Multiprocessor PC. also, when i uninstall a CPU from the device manager, it doesn't even disappear from the list, even though windows prompts me to restart for changes to take effect.

*edit* well i went through the motions anyways, even though the CPUs didn't disappear from the device list, and restarted. nothing changed...same old problem. wow, this is really getting annoying. if windows sees two CPUs in the device manager, then how is there not two graphs in the task manager when the view is set to "one graph per CPU"? and why is my CPU usage at 100% when it should be at 50%? are there any other BIOS settings that might tie into the hyperthreading thing other than just "enable/disable HT"?

Did you do a fresh OS install or did you reuse an old OS? If you didn't do a fresh install, try doing that.

If this doesn't work, consider this a bump and surf on over to Asusbords forums Intel Chipset forums and search. Your problem is somewhat common but is usually solved with the display settings trick, hopefully you'll be able to find your answer by searching at Asusboards.

by a fresh install, do you mean reformat, then install windows? or can i just reinstall over my current installation?

*edit* i couldn't find anything on that display settings trick in the other forums, but i did post something about my problem and hopefully i'll get responses soon. could you mind explaining it or linking me to a thread about it?

Did you run the Intel Chipset Driver install utility?
Latest version is 5.0.2.1003.

You need to make a "fresh" install (format etc...) OR use the REPAIR option when using old installation. Just installing over the old one will not do the trick. So if you have old installation, you will not get it to work properly. You need Win to install the multiprocessor HAL (ie it should say ACPI MULTIPROCESSOR PC in device manager.)!!!

WinXP Pro supports two physical CPUs (and Home does not) but both editions support HT.

Wrong!!! I did not doa fresh install and as soon as I removed by p4b chip and installed the p4c chip...went into bios enabled HT...restarted...winxp loads and finds ACPI multiprocessor as Oldfart stated and my task manager shows 2 graphs....

I use TMPGenc program that has a switch in in for mulitthread and with it on I was around25% faster then with it off.....Yeah I would say it works....

Though the above person is wrong I would suggest in your case to do a fresh install...I would think the mobo obviously supports hyperthreading or the option would not be in the bios.

I did the same when I went from a 2.4B to a 2.6C. It recognized the HT CPU and did everything automatically. No tweaks to the OS at all.

The drivers on the abit CD are just fine...I didn't have to update jack!!! My board came with latest Bios though. try the flashmenu program at Abit and update to latest Bios to be safe.

actually i just updated the BIOS to the most current version last night. that didn't do the trick either, but at least i'm up to date.

*edit* look, you all know how it goes when you have a problem like this...reformatting is a last resort, and i hope i'm not nearing my last resort...
