My new office "toy" didn't get approved. :-(

It wasn't approved because of the IT spending freeze. My boss said yes but corporate said no new equipment for the next 6 months unless it's an emergency. I was told to go nuts when the freeze is lifted. 🙂 Oh well, the ole Pentium 166 (Non-MMX) will just have to last a little longer. 🙁 It would've been a sweeeeeeeet system.

The specs:
2 x Pentium III 866EB Retail
MSI 6321 Mobo (VIA 694X) w/ Onboard Audio
2 x 256MB PC133 SDRAM (512MB Total)
4 x 18.2GB IBM UltraStar U160 SCSI 10K RPM Hard Drives (RAID 5)
Adaptec 2100S U160 RAID Adapter
17X/40X Plextor UltraPlex SCSI CD-ROM
12X/10X/32X Plextor CD-RW SCSI
Adaptec 2930 SCSI Adapter
3.5" Floppy
32MB Matrox Millenium G450 Dual Head
10/100 3Com 905C NIC
19" Sony G400 Monitor
15" Sony A100 Monitor
APC SmartUPS 1400
Microsoft Intellimouse
Microsoft Internet Keyboard
600W PC Power & Cooling
Supermicro SC760 Case

I was going to use a recycled 20/40GB Quantum DLT for backup.

Wish I got to pick out toys like that. 🙁

Oh well, in six months you'll be able to get much better anyway.

ghaakk

If that would be your personal work system (not a server), wouldn't you say you're wasting a lot of money there?

Lol exactly....say the heatsink "fell off" the P166? 🙂

Back to working on the hacked linux box now......

Heh heh... I may "accidently" drop that P166 off my desk repeatedly along with the 15" NEC "FuzzySync" monitor. I've saved the office a lot of money over the last year and hat lead to a lot of people getting new equipment. This is part of my boss's way of saying "thank you" Damn, what a boss!!! 🙂 I'm counting the days.

Whoa SmiZ! New user icon!

kranky

That's not the point. Think of the keyrate that thing would get. Where are your priorities man? 😉

The reason the system is so overblown is because we are moving from Novell to Windows 2000 Server within the next year. My boss wants to get a jump on things and have a "server" type system available so everyone can get familiar. My system would also be the repository for all software and drive images.

BoberFett I meant the storage, not the processors. Point taken! 🙂

Windogg, that makes sense. I too think it's a good idea to have a "similar-to" system available before the real one is rolled out. Saves a lot of time sorting stuff out. I remember when we had TWO Vaxes (both were used in production), and it sure made things easier when we were testing something out.

Kranky, yes. You hit the nail on the head. When we move over to W2K Server. The old Pentium Pro 166 server (w/ 64MB EDO and 5 x 4GB SCSI HDD) will be replaced. The current production server will be demoted to lesser duties. Meanwhile I get a nice toy to play with. I'm hoping to snag that Compaq Proliant server for home use. That bad boy is rock solid and once went more than 2 years without shutting down. :Q

PPros make superb toy computers, I have a PPro-166 (ok, OC'ed 150) on an Intel Aurora MB (450KX) that is stable as a rock and cost me $19 for a 4th 8MB SIMM (it needed to match the other 3 I had to satisfy an early stepping errata)...

...if I could just figure out how to cure that NVRAM error :/

btw, yes. It was legally aquired.

If you are planning on using Win2000/NT on that system, you should know that both desktops running off the DualHead have to be the same resolution. This is a known limitation of Windows2000 and NT. This problem also occurs on with nVidia's TwinView. I currently run a 19" and a 15", but with 2 different video cards (this is supported and works very well, as long as you check the HWCL). I was planning on upgrading to a DualHead or a TwinView card so I could lose some cards, but when I found out that they had to run the same resolution, I changed my mind, and simply upgraded my main card.

If you run Win9x, I think different resolutions will work.

Working for IT rocks! I interned for a company in their IT department last summer and we had ZERO budget. We were able to buy anything so long as the company felt that it was needed to progress the efficiency of company productivity!

Yep, the two resolutions are locked. I plan on using the 15" for server related monitoring and the 19" for regular stuff.

I guess I;m lucky too. Basically any purchase under $5000 does not need VP approval. I put together a budget but my boss just told me to forget about it and spend using my best judgement.
