That rifle is a beauty. I'd probably get thrown in the pokey for owning it in this currently liberal run state of Califronia I live in.

Get a FAB10.

AR15 receiver that has a fixed 10 round magazine. The beauty of the retards in CA? Since it can't hold over 10 rounds, it's not an assault rifle. Know what that means? You can do whatever the hell you want to it. Flash hider? Bayonet lug? Collapsible scope? Short barrel? Name any banned part and you can pretty much stick it on there since it doesn't meet the definition of "assault" rifle. I find it pretty funny. Uses 10 round stripper clips. A load faster than changing magazines.
 
Bah, I hate living in Canada now. There's NO way in hell I could ever own one of those up here 😛

Closest thing I can get is some OLD rifles like a Garand or a Mauser

This is my Glock 22, Glock 27 and Russian SKS. OH NO, it even has a lethal folding stock on it. i've heard the folding stock alone can kill multiple people.

Didn't catch if the Colt is a pre or post ban???

I have a frankenstein AR Oly preban lower, Bushmaster preban upper with a 4 position collapsable stock.

How is the compensated barrel on the 22? Does it really reduce recoil? Any downside?

I did a 2 @ once deal for the Glocks & got the 22C for the price of a 22, IMHO, there's little difference, I currently have a .357 sig bbl in it (non-ported), I love the sig cartridge, fast, lots of penetration.

The compensated glocks aren't very popular, you need to be careful @ night, the flash is greater & directed into your field of vision, the venting drops fps a little, but it does reduce muzzle rise slightly, making it a little easier to acquire the target ofter the last shot.

 
This got me thinking. I have some money, but not a lot. I would like to maybe purchase a handgun or rifle for protection and taking to the range. I'm looking for something reliable (durable and that will last MANY years) and reasonably priced. Ideally, I would like something like the M1911 .45 ACP. A 9mm will work too. Any advice/recommendations would be great.

Kahr makes great little pistols, all steel and easy to conceal. Mine is not much of a range gun, barrel too small. I got it cuz it's a great carry gun. You want a range gun get a .22 target pistol, very accurate and cheap to shoot.
