My New Favourite Pasta Sauce

I'm into Classico® or Bertolli® vodka sauce for the creaminess. I'd say the Classico is tangy-er. Believe it still qualifies as tomato sauce, though blended. Go cream!

A company by the name of FiorFiore showed up at my Walmart with a selection of 3 pasta sauces: Arrabbiata , Tomato and Basil and Tomato and Ricotta.


I tried the Arrabbiata and the Tomato and Ricotta. Both are very good sauces. In fact they are the only sauces I have tried that don't upset my stomach.

I made some spaghetti and meatballs using the ricotta sauce in my Instant Pot. It was awesome.

I saw Rao's getting some praise here, so I bought one on sale last week, and yesterday I tried it. Well, people are right, it's definitely good stuff. Thickness, taste, everything, I only tried Arrabbiata which is what I mostly buy.
It is pricey though, even on sale it was $9/jar, regular price $11. I used to experiment a lot more, but I've somewhat settled into Longo's store brand Arrabbiata (supermarket chain in Ontario) most of the time. I do like Rao's better, but Longo's is pretty close and at $6/slightly bigger jar (I've seen $5 on sale) it's still a better deal. Unless I find Rao's for cheaper, I don't remember seeing it at Costco, though I haven't really paid much attention to that section. I only go through 4-6 jars per year, so I'll probably buy it now and then when it's on sale.

If you have access to Costco they sell 2 jars for $10 on a regular basis.
 
I like the cheap Hunts and DelMonte sauces from the dollar store. Not too much sugar. I always forget which canned sauces I like from the regular store. Pretty sure Prego is too sweet. I think I like Classico, but I might just be misremembering. I just go to the dollar store, get what I like, and save a couple bucks.

Hunts sauce is like Prego... not the worst quality BUT every time I use either one in ANY recipe while it usually tastes okay it has that certain clearly identifiable flavor to it. Way too processed for my tastes.

Hunt's crushed/whole tomatoes OTOH are very good just very salty.... I try to go with either Cento or Rienzi Italian.

I dropped by Costco and they do carry Rao's in Canada: $13.5 for 2 slightly bigger jars.
But they only have Marinara. If you're after that, it's a pretty good price, but it's a pass for me unfortunately.

Just add some red pepper flakes. I never had arrabbiata sauce but it basically looks like marinara sauce with crushed red pepper flakes added to it. I do that anyway. I just had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, and I added garlic and crushed red peppers to Rao's marinara sauce. I don't see the big deal. What's so special about arrabbiata over marinara? Am I wrong in thinking it's basically marinara with crushed red peppers added to the sauce?
 
I don't have pepper flakes, though I have like 6 different paprika/cajun/chilli powders. If you're adding garlic and pepper flakes, you're basically half way to making the sauce from scratch 🙂
Though I also usually add stuff, ground pork, sausages, shrimps, veggies, so adding some pepper flakes too isn't a big deal. I dunno, I thought there was more difference, and you know how stews and stuff taste better the next day, maybe better if pepper flakes are given more time.
Anywho, I bought 3 jars in the regular store, still on sale, I was wrong above, it's $8 and down from $12 regular price for 660ml. It will last me for a while.
 
Pasta sauce is one of few things I can make and actually enjoy more than anything store bought and I like that I can make a huge batch to have enough for like a year so the time spent is well worth it. Due to make another. My last one was a little too much on the spicy side though, dumping a bunch of Mad Dog 367 in it was a bad idea lol.


As a side note I ran out of crushed peppers a while back and could not find any anywhere I went, I ended up finally finding some at Canadian Tire, of all places. It was so random too, just a side shelf near the cashes that had some spices. It's like the grocery stores here just stopped carrying it.

I went to Walmart today and picked up the large jar of FiorFiore Tomato and Basil sauce to try out.

not sure about Timmins but here in London No Frills has lots of bags of crushed red pepper.

I'm sure there must be some too but it just seems every time I looked there was none at the stores I happened to be at. Did not go to each one specifically looking for it though. I was oddly surprised when I saw it at Canadian Tire since that's the last place I'd expect to find something like that.
 
You can always order from amazon. Walmart should carry it as well. But then you do live in Timmins, not much market for spices xd
 
I probably have enough to last me 10 years now so I'm good lol. The one I bought around the time I bought the house ran out like a year ago and I had been trying to find some for a while after that whenever I remembered while I was already at the groceries.

I still need to try a butter chicken recipe, we actually have a small Indian grocery store now, so they probably have all sorts of interesting spices in there that the grocery stores would not have.
 
USA Costco will again offer $2.60 off Rao's marinara sauce 2/28 oz size starting 3/10 through 4/4/21. This time the limit is 10 instead of limit of 2 like previous times. I'll probably buy couple more bottles just to stock up.
