My new desktop, whaddya think?

I've been wanting to build a new desktop for a while, and I can finally afford to do it. Here's what I got (everything's already in the mail):

Case: Coolermaster CM 690 II advanced ($80)
psu: XFX 850w black ed. ($145)
cpu: AMD Phenom 2 955 3.2ghz ($110 on ebay)
mobo: Asus m4a79xtd ($100)
ram: 2x 2gb ripjaw ddr3 1600 ($50)
video: 2x radeon 4890's (~$240 on ebay)
ssd: OCZ vertex 2 60gb ($120)
external hdd: wd 2tb ($110)
hsf: cm hyper212+ ($26)

I'll mostly be using it hooked up to a 46" 1080p tv. Whaddya think about the parts, good value for the $?

Isn't this a question to ask before the parts are ordered and in the mail?

I would've stuck with a single 4gb DIMM personally instead of a pair (or just gone with 8gb initially). Other than that, looks great!

I hope you plan on paying for that operating system. If you decide to 'obtain' Windows 7, bear in mind that 60GB will fill up pretty quickly especially if you plan on installing multiple games.

Heh, yeah I suppose post-purchase input is kinda silly, but I was curious. I got the 2gb dimms because it was cheap, popular on newegg, and enabled dual channel (my cpu-mobo combo do use dual channel, right? I just assumed they did).

Agree that the 4890's doesn't look to be the best. It looks to only be equivalent price/performance of other multi-GPU setups that have more features and are more efficient. (5770 x2 would be $200 and have around 4870x2 performance. 1GB GTX 460 SLI would be $280 and give GTX 580 performance. Both would fit within the $50 AR 650W Earthwatts PSU.)
6950 strikes me as a tad too much right now. $280 was good, but now it's $300.

Shoulda posted before you bought! Crossfire 4890's at this point is just dumb (like borderline retarded).

True cost of your 4890 CFX setup over a single card:
$480 for the GPUs
$95 for the PSU (could have easily used at $50 AR Earthwatts for single GPU)
Total: $575

GTX 580
$510

The GTX 580 would be the same speed assuming perfect (100% )CF scaling, not to mention that it has DX 11 and uses about 2/3rds of the power. In reality 4890 CF's scaling is around 50-60%.

4890 is a rough choice even at only 120 each. Single cards for $240 (5870, gtx470) offer similar performance with less power and heat output, plus have dx11.

yup... Those were like the most energy inefficient cards on the market when they came out lol...

I had been waiting to buy this stuff for a while, I think my decision on the 4890's might have been based on old info/ebay prices. O well. From the toms hardware charts *ducks to avoid tomatoes* the cf 4890's are quite a bit more powerful than a single 5870, and in the lower end of the ballpark range of 5870 cf's. Gtx 470 & ati 6970 auctions are rare on ebay. In the end I probably could have gone with a cheaper psu and a better single card (or gtx 460's). Guess I was just too determined to finally get a sli/xfire setup. Live and learn I suppose. 😛 Thanks for the input guys 🙂

But the single 5870 uses less energy and would have cost you the same. Oh well, it is still a powerful card anyway.
