MY NEW DDR2 ram is only cas4?

I just recently upgraded, built a new pc. The system is a P43.4ghz, Abit 925x MB, and here is the ram

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-525&depa=0

I had a previous system, and I had corsair TWINX DDR 3200 (400MHZ) with 2.5 cas. I'm noticing that the previous system ram was a bit quicker, in some instances and not really sure if I should move ram again. Why is the DDR2 so slow in cas latency, and does it make up for it in other areas? Overall i'm happy with the performance, althought it just appears to me that the older DDR CORSAIR XMS ram was better in some ways. I realize the new DDR2 I got is "value ram" but, even the performance ram DDR2 from corsair appears to only have 4-4-4-12 timings, just like my value ram. Can't fiqure it out, is there some reason DDR2 is sluggish with its timings?

Thanks

One of the issues with DDR2 is the higher latencies. DDR1 is still faster and less expensive.

I have a motherboard with DDR and DDR2 slots, and I was hoping when the price of ddr2 came down I would put some of those in there. If it's no faster than my current ddr... damn... that sucks.

Edit:
JEDEC DDR2 specifications define standard DDR2 CAS Latencies
of 3, 4, and 5:
? 400 MHz DDR2: CAS 3 (3-3-3)
? 533 MHz DDR2: CAS 4 (4-4-4)
? 667 MHz DDR2: CAS 5 (5-5-5)

BUT, Kingston Hyper X can do Cas 3 at 533mhz

Perhaps he's convinced and is going to sell the whole thing :p

But yeah, the 925x chipset is DDR2 only.

Best unbuffered ram there is. :D

Well I have a gig of that junk I'd sell you if you think it's that good. What kind of timings are you getting on yours? PDP does make some decent ram, but the LL series is not it, the XBL series does post some decent numbers.

There is nothing wrong with DDR2, it's just like DDR1, if you buy junk or "value" ram then it has poor timings. Too many people just like posting crap they "read on the internet" without acutally trying it themselves.

DDR2 works on half the frequency internally, so naturally there's a big hit on latencies compared to DDR. The entire reason for DDR2 is to make it easier to manufacture for higher bandwidths, and larger capacities, than DDR. It doesn't in any way suddenly become composed of "faster" or "better" memory chips than DDR. Quite the contrary, actually.

Found the new DDR2 ram for me :)

http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...uct_Code=140388&Category_Code=OCZ_DDR2

Many results say this will go head to head with any of the fastest DDR ram :)

except for the OCZ VX (DDR) stuff that AT showed will do 533ddr at cas 2,2,2,8...

heck my gskills(DDR) wil pull cas 2.5,3,3,6 at 533ddr (rated 2.5,3,3,7 at 550ddr)

I think DDR2 is a marketing gimick...Intel didn't need it yet...What?? it has one set of cpus runing 1066fsb which is 533ddr and there are many makers of DDR ram doing cas 3 at those speed...heck I gave you 2 examples where cas 2 and 2.5 can be done....JEDEC is probably cas 3....

AMD is pushing tremendous bandwidth now and handling it with a dual channel 400ddr controller...

Oh well this may help get the ball started for when we need this stuff and by then hopefully the prices will make it more mainstream...until then I dont see the benefit. I still rather have a northwood system and kick the crap out of most of the current presshite systems now, while doing it cooler.....
